  1. Fieldwork Performance Evaluation

  2. AOTA Fieldwork Performance Evaluation Tool (FWPE) • Measures entry-level competency of occupational therapy students • Differentiates competent and incompetent students • Provides students with accurate evaluations of growth and development of competency • Used to measure students’ abilities to carry out OT processes http://www.somersetmedicalcenter.com/images/occupational-therapy2.jpg

  3. FWPE Form • 42 performance items in 7 sections corresponding with the major competencies required for ethical and professional completion of OT process: • Fundamentals of Practice • Basic Tenets of OT • Evaluation/Screening • Intervention • Management of OT Services • Communication • Professional Behaviors • A four-point rating scale is used to describe competence: • 4 = Exceeds Standards • 3 = Meets Standards • 2 = Needs Improvement • 1 = Unsatisfactory http://www.bclc.org/images/ot.jpg

  4. FWPE Forms • Supervisors must score all items! • If you determine that an item does not fit in your practice setting, clarify how students will demonstrate this competency through written site-specific objectives. • For example, if your site does not utilize COTAs, you could ask students to describe potential uses of COTAs within your setting or to develop plans for how to use COTAs at your facility. • If your site does not do routine evaluations (for example, in public schools), you could ask students to re-evaluate one of the clients on the caseload. http://www.dallascohospital.org/images/kate.jpg

  5. FWPE Standards • If students do not meet standards (scores of 3) on all items in the “Fundamentals of Practice” section, they do not pass the fieldwork rotations. • Students who are meeting the standards you expect should receive scores of “3” for competency. • A score of “4” should be given to “the best student ever”. • The majority of students should NOT score a “4”, even at the final grading. http://www.davisenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/grading-rubric.jpg

  6. Performance Rating Summary Sheet • Page 7 of the FWPE • Used to compare a student’s scores over time • Please write specific comments in the “Midterm” or “Final” spaces at the bottom of each page • Clarify strengths and information regarding improvement needs http://wayneandwax.com/blog-stuff/grading-papers.jpg

  7. Student Self-Evaluations • Students should complete self-evaluations at midterm and final periods. • After you have completed the FWPE, please meet with students to discuss performances and review their evaluations as well as your evaluations. • Transfer final scores to cover sheets and write final summary comments addressing professional competence. • Students and all supervisors who participated in scoring should sign the forms. http://i.pbase.com/u34/blssdjh/large/31288973.DSC01610.jpg

  8. Student Requirements • Students must report midterm grades and discuss their progress with fieldwork supervisors and coordinators. • Students are required to complete Midterm Feedback Forms and discuss these with their fieldwork supervisors. • The last page of the FWPE midterm and the Midterm Feedback Form should be faxed to the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, Lisa Tekell, by the 7th week. • After final completion, the FWPE and SEFWE originals should be sent to Lisa Tekell. • (901) 448-8072 • ltekell@utmem.edu http://serc.carleton.edu/images/NAGTWorkshops/careerprep07/discussion.jpg
