Narcissus • A young man born with extraordinary beauty • He cruelly ejects everyone ( but he dates Echo) • When he went to go drink some water, he saw his reflection in the lake and immediately falls in love with himself. • His obsession with his own beauty killed him • Meaning: Obsessive focus on oneself. • Examples • I got the feeling Janet was a bit narcissistic when I noticed that she had at least three mirrors hanging in every room of her house. • Tom is a narcissist when he spends all day looking in the mirror. • Being narcissistic isn’t good for your health, so lets go outside.

  3. Achilles Heel • When he was a baby, his mother dipped him in the River Styx which gave him Immortality. • His mother held him by the heel, so that was the only mortal part of his body. • He was eventually killed in the Trojan War when a poison arrow struck his heel. • Meaning: Person’s area of particular vulnerability. • Example • Her inability to resist rich desserts was her Achilles Heel, keeping her from losing the 10 pounds she wanted to lose. • Everyone has an weakness or Achilles Heel. • My Achilles Heel is money.

  4. Can you say Shibboleth?

Shibboleth • Hebrew word for “corn” • Israelites used it as a password to prevent enemies from entering their land. • Sometimes they actually killed some Israelites. • Meaning: Slogan/ Catchword • Example • The Shibboleth of that political party seems to be “no new taxes for any reason. • Mr. James’ Shibboleth is “Welcome back” when we are loud.

  6. Cassandra • The daughter of Priam, the last king of Troy. • She is the most beautiful of Priam’s daughters. • She was loved by the god Apollo, who promised her powers of prophecy if she would do what he desires. She received the gift, but refuses to do his favors. • Meaning: Someone who predicts disaster or negative results. • Example • I finally stopped asking my friend Celia for advice when I had a decision to make. She is such a Cassandra; if I listened to her then I would face my doom. • Newscasters are Cassandra’s, they predict all sorts of disasters and report it on T.V. • My brother would be an example of a Cassandra, since he predicts all sorts of disastrous events.
