The Roman Republic • 270 B.C Rome conquered all of Italy • Citizen soldiers make up Army • Basic unit was a legion = 5000 men • Conquered Carthage, Greece, Macedonia & Asia Minor • Punic Wars  defeated Carthage and Hannibal • Submit to Roman leaders, pay taxes, supply soldiers • Allowed to keep customs, money, gov’t • Built network of military roads
