Globalization • The modern world is getting “smaller” – we have access to more information, products etc. • What is globalization? • the integration of economic, political, and cultural systems across the globe • a force for economic growth, and freedom • the dominance of developed countries, at the expense of poorer, less powerful nations • a force for environmental devastation, exploitation of the developing world, and suppression of human rights • Does globalization only benefit the rich or can the poor take advantage of it to improve their well-being?

Catholic and Canadian approaches • Canada is diverse, and becoming even more so. • pluralism – many ethnic and religious groups are present and accepted; this is beneficial to society • Key teachings of Jesus: inclusivity and equality – all have dignity, created in God’s image. • Religious pluralism is the view that one religion does not hold the only truth; all religions are seen as valid in their way.

Think about the issues, answer the following in your own notes: • Why do you think religion is often used as an excuse for violence and hatred? What does RaheelRaza say specifically about this through the message of her article? • How does RaheelRaza suggest we build mutual respect, in your own words? • What responsibility does RaheelRaza give to religious leaders in building mutual respect? What is your opinion on this? • What is the difference between tolerance and acceptance? Create an example of each to explain how they are different. • “Diversity is a gift from God” – do you agree? Why or why not?
