  2. What is the sentence structure of the sentence below? Write the original sentence and label it. Then, rewrite it into a compound sentence. Although I was hungry, my lunch was in two long hours. Page 109 Tiger TreasureJanuary 7-11

  3. When you finish your vocabulary quiz, put it in the class’s box. Then, read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry independently wherever you and your partner stopped yesterday. Complete your novel response.

  4. Let’s discuss your novel responses. The following are some examples of answers which I consider to be “complete.” I will NOT accept junk from you on these novel responses. Give me your best effort!

  5. Why did Cassie and Little Man not want the books?

  6. Cassie and Little Man did not want the books because they were old and dirty, not new. On page 23, Little Man asks for another book and says, “That one’s dirty.” Page 25 shows what was stamped inside Cassie’s book. It showed that white children had used the book for eleven years, and the black children only got the books when they were old and worn out. At first Little Man and Cassie were excited about having their own books, but they didn’t want someone else’s trash.

  7. How did their teacher react to their behavior? Why?

  8. On page 23, it says Miss Crocker was “appalled.” That means she was shocked and horrified. She was just grateful to have books at all; she didn’t care that they were worn out. She wanted the children to be grateful, too. On page 27, it says that Miss Crocker wasn’t even offended when she saw the stamp on the inside front cover of the books. On page 29, Miss Crocker goes to tell Mama about the incident and that she whipped Cassie and Little Man with a hickory stick. She said she wanted Mama to “give them a piece of your mind.” She expects Mama to also be outraged.

  9. How did their mama react to their behavior? Why?

  10. She didn’t like that Cassie and Little Man disobeyed their teacher, and she told Miss Crocker that she understood why she whipped them. However, Mama also pasted a piece of paper over the inside cover of Cassie’s and Little Man’s books, as well as all of those that belonged to her own students. This shows that she understood why Cassie and Little Man were so upset and offended, and she wanted to do something to try and make it better.

  11. What does their Mama’s reaction reveal to you about her character?

  12. Mama doesn’t get upset with Cassie and Little Man or Miss Crocker. That shows that she can be very patient and understanding. Miss Crocker tells Mama that she is “biting the hand that feeds you.” Mama replies, “If that’s the case, Daisy, I don’t need that little bit of food.” I think she means that she doesn’t want somebody’s help if it’s not really generous. She realizes that the school was given the books because they were too old for the white kids to use, so she doesn’t really consider it to be a blessing. She also covers up the inside cover in all of her students’ books so that they won’t know the books are so old or see the children’s races written in there. She does this even though Miss Crocker tells her she will get in trouble. This makes me think that she is the kind of person who will stand up for what she believes in, even if there is a risk. She sees the injustice in the world and wants to do something about it.

  13. With your partner, rewrite the following sentences into complex sentences which contain adjective clauses. You must each do your own work, but you can help each other. This is for a grade. When you finish, put it in the class’s box, and then read silently a book of your choice. If it is your comfortable spot day, get comfy! Grammar Review
