  1. Math 5Fractions as Division Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

  2. In this lesson we will learn about the relationship between fractions and the process of division.

  3. Do this problem mentally. Don’t write anything down but the answer. Begin with 79. Add 21. Subtract 96. Divide by 2. Math Warm-up Pause to work

  4. Do this problem mentally. Don’t write anything down but the answer. Begin with 79. Add 21. Subtract 96. Divide by 2. Math Warm-up - ANSWER Answer: 2

  5. In this lesson we will answer the question: How can fractions be used to show division?

  6. Vocabulary fraction – a symbol, such as ¾, used to describe one or more parts of a whole that is divided into equal parts. A fraction can name a part of a whole, a part of a set, a location on a number line, or a division of whole numbers.

  7. Vocabulary numerator - the number above the fraction bar in a fraction denominator - the number below the fraction bar in a fraction numerator 1 2 denominator

  8. Vocabulary Review dividend- the number to be divided. 24 ÷ 4 = 6 divisor- the number that a dividend is divided by. 24 ÷ 4 = 6

  9. Vocabulary Review quotient - the number that is the result of dividing. 24 ÷ 4 = 6 6 is the QUOTIENT!

  10. Connecting to Previous Learning Fractions represent equal parts of a whole.

  11. Connecting to Previous Learning This whole is broken into four equal parts. The denominator shows that the whole is in four equal parts.

  12. Connecting to Previous Learning The numerator shows how many of the equal parts one has.

  13. Fractions also represent division.10 ÷ 2 = 10 2

  14. Al, Lisa, Nico, and Laura are making a picture. They will share 3 rectangular strips of colored paper. What fraction represents the part of a whole strip of paper each will get? Find 3 ÷ 4 1 whole 1 whole 1 whole

  15. One way to divide 3 wholes into 4 equal parts is to first divide each whole into 4 equal parts. Each part is ¼ of a whole. Find 3 ÷ 4 1 whole 1 whole 1 whole

  16. Rearrange the quarter pieces so that each person gets 3 of the ¼ pieces. Each gets ¾. Al Nico Lisa Laura

  17. The teacher gives 7 packs of paper to a group of 4 students. If they share the paper equally, how much paper does each student get?

  18. Each student receives 1 whole pack of paper and 1⁄4 of the each of the 3 packs of paper. So each student gets 1 3⁄4 packs of paper.

  19. Document Camera Get your notebook and pencil ready. Make sure you have the Lesson # and date on your page.

  20. Give each answer as a fraction:1. 1 ÷ 22. 9 ÷ 103. 3 ÷ 44. 7 ÷ 115. 5 ÷ 8

  21. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice If 9 people want to share a 50-pound sack of rice equally by weight, how many pounds of rice should each person get?

  22. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice If 9 people want to share a 50-pound sack of rice equally by weight, how many pounds of rice should each person get?

  23. Lesson Review Fractions are also a representation of division. The numerator is the dividend and the denominator is the divisor. Use models to help you represent fractions as division.

  24. Give each answer as a fraction:1. 5 ÷ 92. 3 ÷ 63. 1 ÷ 54. 6 ÷ 125. 3 ÷ 23

  25. In your Math Notebook Ten team members are sharing 3 boxes of cookies. How much of a box will each student get? Quick Check

  26. Ten team members are sharing 3 boxes of cookies. How much of a box will each student get? Quick Check - ANSWER Each person would get 3/10 of a box.

  27. Good Work with this lesson. Today you learned about the relationship between fractions and division.
