Enhancing partnership among Africa RISING, NAFAKA, and TUBORESHE CHAKULA Programs for fast tracking delivery and scaling

This project aims to enhance collaboration and accelerate the delivery and scaling of agricultural technologies in Tanzania's maize-based systems. It involves the introduction and promotion of improved crop varieties, demonstration of good agronomic practices, and implementation of soil and water conservation measures. Progress has been made in establishing demonstration plots and conducting field days, despite challenges such as drought and operational issues.

Core Activities • Introduce and promote improved varieties: • Maize, groundnuts, Soybean and beans • Demonstrate the performance of organic and inorganic fertilizer in maize and legumes • Demonstrate improved maize and legume varieties under good agronomic management practices • Demonstrate appropriate in-situ soil and water conservation measures i.e. contour and tie ridges • Demonstrate appropriate water harvesting and irrigation options

Criteria for selecting villages • In line with the feed the future expectations, target numbers to be achieved • Crop production area – • Are they producing the crops we are trying to promote • What scale is this crop being produced-in terms of importance is it a priority crop (value-food, cash, feed) • Is it a crop they are already producing (We do not want to introduce the crop as a new crop) • Visibility- close to the road • Crop potential in terms of market access/ link • Feed the future site where our partners (NAFAKA) already have network

Progress • Protocols for setting up demonstration plots for groundnuts, maize, beans, and soybean were developed and are in use. • Field maps and field books available • NAFAKA agronomists have been trained on implementation of demonstrations and the protocols to be used for setting up demonstration plots • Demonstration sites were set up in all sites (25 farmers were selected at each site in each district = total 25 farmers per district) • Activity schedule was developed for the implementation of activities but we now need a new one for next round of activities • Good agronomic management applied: • Fertilizer both basal and top dressing • Plots free of weeds • AMINATA is producing seed for 2015/16 mother demos and baby plots

Progress • Team planning and progress meeting held that led to refinement of team activities for better results • Eight field days conducted in the districts of Babati (2), Kiteto (1), Kongwa (1) and Kilosa (4) to share results of the demonstrations and to establish stronger networks with local government, input suppliers for sustained implementation of the promising innovations. • Yield data collected to assess yield advantage of improved varieties under Good Agronomic practices and natural resource management. • Draft field guide for maize, soybean, beans agronomy developed for use in training. • Master plan for establishing and managing demonstration plots prepared for further review. • Requirements for strengthening of community empowerment (groups, trainers, involvement of local government) started; to be done in detail next quarter.

  16. Challenges • Severe drought in Kongwa, Kiteto and babati • Operational challenges in sites where our partners such as NAFAKA are not present • Theft of crops in the field (Maize)

Future Plans • Training of lead farmers in Kongwa, Kiteto, Mvomero, Kilosa and Babati • Profiling of groups in non-NAFAKA districts in preparation for training in group strengthening • Involvement with community leaders in non-NAFAKA districts to select farmer trainers • Field days in Mvomero district • Collection and processing of harvest/yield data • Targeted soil and water conservation pilots • Participatory variety selection for scaling
