  3. Coaches Meetings • 3-5 Minute mark • Be nice, don’t make coach angry before game • Head coach MUST attend meeting

  4. COACH COMMUNICATION • COMMUNICATE TO DEESCALATE • What you say • What you don’t say • Body Language - Positive and calm • Perception • Games are on film • “By Rule” • Everyone is different • Remember Assistants grow up to be head coaches

  5. COACH COMMUNICATION • Respond to coaches, don’t initiate • Don’t explain partners calls • Coach my partner had a great look • Coach my partner will be over and you can ask him • Coach I’ll find out for you • Protect your partner • Don’t allow coach to yell across court at them

  6. COACH COMMUNICATION • Coaches want to be hear and acknowledged • Statements may need acknowledgement • I hear you coach • I will take a look at that • Ok • No problem coach • Coach explain what are you seeing there • I understand coach

  7. COACH COMMUNICATION • The animated and gesturing coach • Everyone can see these • Possible actions • Coach I’ll answer your questions but I need you to stop gesturing • Coach put your arms down, I’ll answer your questions

  8. COACH COMMUNICATION • The loud coach • Coach I’m right here, you don’t need to yell at me. • Coach I’ll talk to you all night but you need to stop yelling • Coach just talk to me • Coach I’m not going to let you yell across the court at my partner

COACH COMMUNICATION • Egregious actions – No warning • Comments directed at or referring to any game official that question the integrity of an official (e.g., repeated references to the number of fouls called against each team; suggesting an official is “cheating” a team, etc.). • Profane, vulgar, threatening or derogatory remarks directed at or referring to any game official or opposing player/bench personnel.

  12. COACH COMMUNICATION • Prolonged, negative responses to a call/no-call which is disrespectful or unprofessional and includes, but is not limited to: thrashing the arms in disgust, dramatizing contact by reenacting the play, or running or jumping in disbelief over a call/no-call. • A negative response to a call/no-call including, but not limited to, approaching/charging an official in a hostile, aggressive or otherwise threatening manner, emphatically removing one’s coat in response to a call/ no-call or throwing equipment or clothing on to the floor.

  13. COACH COMMUNICATION • Continual criticism during a game regarding the same incident after receiving a warning from an official. • Taunting, baiting, ridiculing, finger pointing, trash talking or inappropriate gestures (obscene, provoking, and intimidating).
