  2. What I hope to do tonight: • Inform you of the different types of high schools in Chicago • Let you know about some of the different opportunities available in high school • Show you where you can find more information • Inform you of the requirements for specific high school programs

Selective Enrollment High Schools • Lane Tech • Northside College Prep • Whitney Young • Walter Payton • Jones Prep ISAT scores determine whether or not you are eligible to apply (minimum stanines of 5 in both reading and math are required) Application - Rank order of preference important Entrance Exam Applicants are ranked by a composite score consisting of 7th grade report card grades & test scores, and the entrance exam score

Test Scores Stanines and Percentiles • A way of grouping test scores • Go up to the 99th percentile or the 9th stanine • Stanines of 5 - “average” • Typically stanines of 7 and up get accepted to Selective Enrollment High Schools – NSCP and Payton Prep applicants have stanines of 9, straight A’s in 7th grade and score a perfect score on the entrance exam

International BaccalaureateDiploma Programme • Academically challenging • Encourages international-mindedness • Balances breadth and depth of subjects • Rigorous Assessment • Attendance at an Information Session is required by each IB School. Students must be eligible to attend an Information Session, based on their seventh grade test scores and grades. • Each school sets it own cutoff score to determine eligibility for attendance at its Information Session. You must attend an Information Session at each school where you are applying and meet the Information Session cutoff score.

Military Academies and JROTC programs • Offer rigorous and relevant college preparatory curriculum. • Each academy focuses on a different branch of the military. • There is no expectation for students to enter the military after graduation. • Specific opportunities are provided for leadership, teamwork, and service. School-within-a-School Taft Naval Academy Steinmetz Army Academy • Attendance at ONE information session is required • Students are selected for seats in Military Academies based on a two-part questionnaire and a brief essay completed at the required Information Session -- along with their standardized test scores and final classroom grades from seventh grade

  11. CTE – College and Career Academies • Prepare students for college and career success. • Offer hands-on training in various industries. • May give students opportunities to earn college credit and participate in job shadows and internships.

  18. Set Goals • Think about the schools you want to attend • Know what the requirements are for that school • Develop and practice good study skills • Work hard every quarter in 7th grade • Remember that not getting an acceptance letter is disappointing – but not the end of the world !!!!

To Do and To Know • Save final 7th grade report card and make copies • Next year make a copy of the 1st quarter 8th grade report card before returning it • Pay attention to deadlines • Don’t wait until the last minute • Check applications carefully • Turn in completed paper applications as soon as possible • Understand that acceptance letters are “binding” – Return only one acceptance letter. You can only accept one school placement.

  20. Final Considerations Help your child be the best student he or she can be Is the assignment notebook filled out everyday? Is homework being completed and turned in? Is enough time being spent studying for tests? Check your child’s progress regularly by using Parent Portal . Want to be prepared for the entrance exam? Read, read, read - Participate in class - Complete your homework Stay motivated – Keep your goal in mind
