Classifying Reactions

Classifying Reactions. 6 Subgroups. Formation (Synthesis) Reactions (F). Element + Element  Compound E + E  C Examples: Hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water. Carbon and hydrogen combine to form methane. Zn + S 8  ZnS Cl 2 + Na  NaCl Hg + O 2  HgO.

  1. Classifying Reactions 6 Subgroups

  2. Formation (Synthesis) Reactions (F) Element + Element  Compound • E + E  C • Examples: • Hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water. • Carbon and hydrogen combine to form methane. • Zn + S8  ZnS • Cl2 + Na  NaCl • Hg + O2  HgO

  3. Decomposition Reactions (D) Compound  Element +Element • C  E + E • Examples: • Water is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen. • Sodium chloride is broken down into sodium and chlorine. • Fe2S3  Fe + S8 • H2O  H2 + O2 • MgCl2  Mg + Cl2

  4. Single Replacement Reactions (SR) Element + Compound  Compound + Element • E + C  C + E (same as C + E  E + C, etc.) • Metals change places; like a dance! • *Use charges to ensure proper rearrangement!!

  5. SR Examples • I2 + SnCl2  SnI2 + Cl2 • Cu + AgNO3  Cu(NO3)2 + Ag • NaI + Cl2  I2 + NaCl • Al + HOH  Al(OH)3 + H2 (Note: HOH = H2O)

  6. Double Replacement Reactions (DR) Compound + Compound  Compound + Compound • C + C  C + C • Like 2 couples dancing and each switching partners (metals switch). • Use charges for proper rearranging.

  7. DR Examples • HCl + NaOH  NaCl + H2O (ie. HOH) • AgNO3 + NaCl  NaNO3 + AgCl

  8. Combustion Reactions (C) Fuel + O2 CO2 + H2O • Fuels usually contain H, C and sometimes O • C3H8 + O2  CO2 + H2O • CH4 + O2  CO2 + H2O • CH3OH + O2  CO2 + H2O

  9. Other Reactions (O) Any reactions that don’t fit the previous 5 patterns is classed as “other”. • CaCO3 CO2 + CaO (ie. C  C + C) • CS2 + Cl2  CCl4 + S2Cl2 • SiO2 + Na2CO3  Na2SiO3 + CO2

  10. Classify the following reactions: • 1. Na + HOH  NaOH + H2 • 2. Al + O2  Al2O3 • 3. C2H5OH + O2  CO2 + H2O • 4. Ca(NO3)2 + Na2SO4  NaNO3 + CaSO4 • 5. AlBr3  Al + Br2 • 6. PCl3 + H2O  H3PO4 + HCl
