  2. King Kalakaua: was forced to change Hawaii constitution to grant voting rights only to wealthy landowners • George Dewey; naval commander who led American forces into Manilla Bay and destroyed Spanish forces. • Pearl Harbor: US pressured Hawaii leaders to let them build a naval base there

De Lome Letter: criticized President McKinley and angered Americans. • Alfred Mahan: US Navy admiral advised US to construct new battleships • Sanford Dole:1893 became provisional President of Hawaii • Roosevelt Corollary: diplomatic policy of denying recognition of Latin American governments that the US viewed as oppressive, undemocratic or hostile to US interests.
