Ngo Dihn Diem (the leader of South Vietnam prior to the war) was assassinated as part of a coup to overthrow the government • Escalation (more U.S. troops, weapons, and deadly technology) of the war happened under Lyndon Johnson • Vietnam was split into North and South Vietnam at the Geneva Conference

  3. Battle of Pleiku: Vietcong attacked Pleiku air base, killing 9 soldiers. After this attack, Lyndon Johnson ordered Operation Rolling Thunder, partially in response to the attack. • American names for the guerrilla fighters in South Vietnam: Vietcong, Charlie, VC.
