  2. Scholastic Literacy Partners We have a National Literacy Crisis: • Every school day in America 7,000 students drop out! • Many large urban school districts are reporting drops out rates in excess of 70% for African American males! • Only 1/3 of 8th grade students read at grade level! • More than 1.6 million youths 18 & younger were arrested in 2006! • 70% of unemployed Americans read at the two lowest reading levels! • Parental literacy is one of the single most important indicators of a child’s success. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has concluded that youngsters whose parents are functionally illiterate are twice as likely to be functionally illiterate themselves. *Research and statistics provide by National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and Crimes in the U.S. 2006 FBI Uniform Report.

  3. Scholastic Literacy Partners We have a National Book Crisis: • 61% of low income families do not own a single book! • A typical middle class child enters 1st grade with 1,000 hours of being read to, while the low-income child averages 25 hours! • By age four, children who live in poor families will have heard 32 million fewer words than children living in professional families! • 80% of the preschools and after school programs serving at-risk children have no books! • The only behavioral measure that correlates significantly with reading scores is the number of books in the home! *Research and statistics provided by Department of Education.

  4. Scholastic Literacy Partners The researchers tell us: • Access to an abundance of books at home as well as the classroom results in increased reading, motivation and reading achievement. -- Guthrie, Schafer, Von Secker & Alban 2000. • Students provided with well designed libraries- read more, demonstrate more positive attitudes towards reading and score higher on standardized tests of reading achievement. -- NAEP, 2002. • It’s not just about students literacy, its about their lives. -- Alfred Tatum, 2005. • 89% of students stated that they picked out their favorite book. -- Yankelovich, 2008.

  5. Scholastic Literacy Partners The experts are saying: • Access to books is critical • Books need to be: • Appropriate Reading Level • High interest and Engaging (Critical for at risk students) • Make sure books are relevant to the kids • Partner with schools, districts, and organizations to engage parents to support literacy and education. • Typical “literate home” begins with a well-stocked bookshelf containing 30-50 or more books. -- Cunningham & Allington, 1999
