Allegory • a device in which characters or events represent or symbolize ideas and concepts. • Most often utilizes an EXTENDED METAPHOR • Usually mimics the pattern of historical events related to a major event • Can be displayed through art or literature • Each fictional character and setting have a corresponding REAL representative in the time period

  3. Famous Allegorical Works • The Little Prince by Exupery • Made fun of the decadence of the French court • A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner • Represented the deline of “The Old South” • Lord of the Flies by William Golding • Follows the “leader of the pack” philosophy held in esteem by wolves and humans alike • Of Mice and Men by John Steinback • Represents the struggle of the working class in America

How Animal Farm is an allegory • Old Major’s Dream = Karl Marx’s Socialism Manifesto • The Battle of Cowshed = Russian Civil War • Windmill = Stalin (Napolean) and Trotsky’s (Snowball) opposing viewpoints • The Hen Rebellion= Stalin’s Great Purge • Battle of the Windmill= World War I • Saying goodbye to Boxer = Stalin ignores the working class (his biggest supporters)

  5. Satire • Allegory is the tool; satire is the genre • vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement.

  6. So Animal Farm is a satire which utilizes allegory to portray the brutality and misdirection of the Russian Revolution.
