  2. There are different kinds of noun: • Proper noun • Common noun • Abstract noun • Concrete noun • Count noun • Mass noun • Collective noun • Compound noun • Possessive noun • Special noun

  3. Proper noun: • These nouns refers to specific or particular persons, places, or things. They begin with capital letter. Examples: Pope John Paul II, Maria, The Predator(movie), Master showman ( T.V. program) • Pope John Paul II is the very popular pope this year. • Maria is my best friend. • We watched The Predator last week in cinema. • Master Showman is a very entertaining show in GMA

  4. Common noun • These are the names of persons, things, and places in general. Examples: book, friend, actress, bag • The book is under the table. • My friend is in our house today. • My favorite actress is Beyonce. • I like your bag.

  5. Activity: Determine whether each noun is a common noun or a proper noun. ● If the noun is common, write “common noun” on the line. ● If the noun is proper, re-write the noun on the line using correct capitalization.

  11. Abstract noun • Names of ideas, feelings, qualities and emotions. They refer to matters that don’t exist in the physical world, but known through the effects they create. Examples: love, intelligence, patience • Love is everyone’s need. • Intelligence is one of our criteria in judging the competition. • Patience is a virtue.

  12. Concrete noun • These are nouns that appeal to one’s sense; they refer to object that exist in the physical world. Example: building, dogs, chairs • This building is huge. • The dogs are barking. • I love this chairs very much.

  13. Count noun • Words that refers to things that can be counted; they can be made in plural by adding “s” to their end parts. Examples: 1.boy – boys 2.dog – dogs 3.table – tables

  14. Mass noun • These refer to things that cannot be counted. Those nouns do not have plural equivalents. They can be quantified, nevertheless, by the use of counters or unit of measure which can be pluralized. Examples: A piece of paper pieces of paper A strand of hair strands of hair A bowl of soup bowls of soup A cup of tea cups of tea A pack of soup packs of cigarette

  18. Collective Nouns • These are the words that name a group or a collection of persons, places and things. Examples: A group of stars- constellation A group of laborers- union A group of fish- school of fish

  19. Compound Nouns • If the nouns are made up of 2 or more words, they are called COMPOUND NOUNS. Examples: Executive Manager Chief-of-Police Branch Manager

  22. Possessive Nouns • these are the nouns that use an apostrophe to show that a thing belongs to somebody or something. Example: girl’s wallet girls’ wallet woman’s ideas women’s ideas boy’s bag boys’ bag

  23. Special Nouns • these are nouns that follow a unique way of pluralization. Examples: measles Physics shorts sheep

  24. Activity: • Change the following statement to show possession • Write it on a one half sheet of paper. • Answer only.
