  3. Hughes, Langston Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was an American author. He wrote works in all forms, including plays, poetry, and short pieces called sketches. He was born in Joplin, Missouri. He became best known for his poetry and his sketches about an outspoken, emotional African American man called “Simple.” Simple gives his opinions on issues of the day. Hughes used Simple to show what an intelligent but uneducated African American man might say. In his poetry, Hughes wrote proudly about African American people. He used rhythms of African American music in his poetry. His success probably inspired other African American poets to experiment with such rhythms in their poetry.   4. Nobel Prizes The Nobel Prizes are named after alfred B. Nobel (1833-1896), a Swedish scientist who invented dynamite, and left money to be given every year to people who have helped humankind. Albert Einstein, the world-famous German-born physicist, won the physics prize in 1921. the Polish-French scientist Marie Curie won two Nobel Prizes – one in physics in 1903 (with Pierre curie, her husband, and Henry Becquerel) and one in chemistry in 1911. Prizes are also given for medicine-physiology, literature, economics and peace. The Nobel Peace Prize goes to people who the judges thick did the most during the past year to help achieve peace. In 1999 the prize went to Doctors Without Borders, a group that volunteers to help people in dangerous places. Other Prizes and Awards Spingarn Medal The Spingarn Medal was set up in 1914 by Joel Elias Spingarn, leader of the National association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) It is awarded every year by the NAACP for achievement by a black American. Here are some winners. 1994: Maya Angelou (Writer and poet ) 1999: Earl G. Gaines ( Writer) 2000: Oprah Winfrey (actress and philanthropist) 2005 Oliver W. Hill (civil rights lawyer) 2006 Benjamin Carson (neurosurgeon) 2007 John Conyers (congressman) 2008 Ruby Dee (actress) (not yet presented) 2009 Julian Bond(activist) All About Rosa Parks In 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, a black woman named Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving a white man her seat on the bus, as required by segregation laws. The result: Black people in the city stayed off the buses for 382 days, until the law was struck down by the Supreme court. This boycott, led by Martin Luther King Jr., started the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. The Medal of Honor The Medal of Honor is given by the United States Government for bravery in war against an enemy. The first medals were awarded in 1863. Since that time, nearly 3,400 people have received the award
