  2. Bell-ringer Read p171 and respond to the following prompts silently on your bell-ringer/exit ticket handout: • Why is communication between the external and internal environment more complicated in complex organisms? • Do humans and other organisms have to consciously plan and carry out a response to every change in the external environment? Explain.

  3. Chap 5 Essential Question • How do our organ systems work together to help maintain our body’s internal balance (homeostasis)?

  4. OBJECTIVES Students will be able to……. • Pull out the Very Important Points (VIP’s) from a reading by completing a Metacognitive Reading Log

  5. AGENDA • Discuss BR & Chap 5 • Review changes to assignment collection & BR/Summary policy • Review changes to biology binder & notebook • Complete VIP reading Log

  6. How will in class and homework assignments be collected & graded? • All assignments for the week will be collected in a packet on Friday. • All assignments must be complete and have a stamp to earn full credit. • Graded assignment packets will be passed back the following week. It is your job to return these assignments to the appropriate section of your binder.

  7. How will bell-ringers & exit tickets be collected & graded? • All students will receive a new bell-ringer/exit ticket sheet on Monday. All bell-ringers & exit tickets must be completed and stamped on this sheet to receive full credit. • This bell-ringer/exit ticket sheet will be collected on Friday as part of your weekly assignment packet.

  8. How will the new biology binder be set up? Everyone will be required to have a 2” biology binder by Friday with the following dividers set up and work organized: Section 1: Reference • For handouts such as lab report rubrics, think out loud bookmarks, reading log templates, etc. Section 2: Bell-ringers & Exit Tickets Section 3: Reading Logs Section 4: Assignments (in & out of class) Section 5: Assessments (Tests/Quizzes/Exams)

  9. Do I need a composition book anymore? • Yes! You still need your composition book. • Your composition book will be used now as a lab notebook. • All work for all labs will be done in your composition book. • You will then take what you wrote in your lab notebook and type up your lab report. • Remove all bell-ringers & reading logs from your notebook and place them in your binder by Friday.

  11. Homework • Finish VIP Reading Log if not finished in class • Organize biology binder by Friday. There will be a binder check & lab notebook check.

  12. SUMMARY • Looking at the thoughts you wrote in your reading log, what level would you place yourself in the metacognitive funnel? • What could you do to get to the next higher level?

  14. Bell-ringer Read the paragraph under “What’s Your Temperature Now?” on p173 and respond to the following prompt on your bell-ringer handout. What were the external stress factors discussed? What was the body’s automatic physiological response to those factors? Homework Bin: VIP reading log p229-231
