  16. Bolton University Technical College Competition For Schools March 2014 Nooshin Akrami N.Akrami@Bolton.ac.uk

  17. Bolton UTC: A unique opportunity • As the only university based school in the area, Bolton University Technical College represents a £10m investment in academic excellence and will specialise in engineering technologies and healthcare sciences. The College will be built on the University of Bolton campus occupying a prime position on a major route into Bolton.

  18. What Is a UTC? • A college for students aged 14 to 18 which specialises in technical studies and is sponsored by a university. • It offers full time courses which combine practical and academic studies. • Employers are involved from the start in shaping the curriculum.

  19. Why start at 14? • 11 is too early to choose a subject path to follow and 16 is too late. Students who know what they want to do can often become bored at school and so underachieve by the time they are 16.

  20. Improving job prospect • Employers play a major part in UTCs. • They help plan what students are going to learn and ensure that the qualifications students gain are what employers require. • They also meet the students on work placements in order to get to know them.

  21. Alternative paths after a UTC • Students can either go onto to a higher level apprenticeship in employment or onto a university. The UTC will help them decide which is the best route for them.

  22. Offered qualifications by UTC • This can vary but all offer GCSEs in at least English, maths and science combined with a modern foreign language, a humanities subject and practical and technical qualifications which are recognised by employers and universities.

  23. What do we expect from you? • We want our architects and builders to incorporate the vision of young people from the area into the building designs, hence want VIP: • Your VISION of an “Educational Environment” suitable for our UTC, • Your IDEA of an “Outstanding Structure” for Bolton • Your PERCEPTION of “High Quality Facilities” for high achieving students.

  24. The Prize • First Prize of £10,000 to the winning school - 10% of which is to be shared between the winning pupils. • A one year University of Bolton Tuition Fees Scholarship to be awarded to the winning school to be awarded to any pupil in the school. • Runners up prizes including theme park tickets and music vouchers.

  25. Judges • The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Colin Shaw; • Architect and Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Christian Wewer from CW Consult; • Architect, Neil Pike from Neil Pike Architects; • Fine Art lecturer and artist, Dave Gledhill; and • BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology course leader, Nooshin Akrami.

  26. About the Competition • The competition is open to teams of students in Years 7-11 and should comprise around 4 or 5 pupils. • The challenge can be set to as many teams at each school but only one team from each school can be put forward. • Submit your entry in the form of Maximum of 3 x A1 Boards by 5pm on Monday 31 March to Paul Starkey at our Marketing Office in Chancellor's Mall. • Shortlisted entries will be invited to present (with a PowerPoint presentation) their entry to the judges on 3 April here at the University. The winner will be announced at an Award Ceremony after Easter – the date and time to which will be communicated in due course.

  27. Supporting you If you may wish to have an internal competition and need our assistance with selection of the competing entry or require a pre-submission appraisal by University of Bolton staff, please contact either Paul Starkey via P.Starkey@Bolton.ac.uk Or Nooshin Akrami via N.Akrami@Bolton.ac.uk, for this to be arranged.
