  1. Exam Question Question: Examine and Explain the factors that influence the development of a primary economic activity in a Core region you have studied.

  2. Secondary Economic Activities in the Paris Basin • Paris is the economic centre of the country it has more manufacturing industries than any other region in France

Government Policy • The Government has encouraged industrial development in the Paris Basin by designating 8 competitive clusters in the region. • These clusters bring industry, business and research together and aim to increase production in many new and existing industries. • An example of one is Cosmetic Valley a large area to the West of Paris

Cosmetic Valley • Cosmetic Valley is an area in the Paris Basin that includes • Over 400 Companies • 6 Universities • accounting for 45,000 jobs and a turnover of over 10 Billion euro/15 Billion dollars (the amount of money taken in a year) • Cosmetic Valley is a centre for specialist human resources in many businesses in the cosmetics industry from • growing aromatic plants • creating and formulating products • manufacturing perfumes and cosmetics • control testing and analysis laboratories • advertising, design and packaging. • All of these factors make the Paris Basin a major industrial centre.

  6. Paris City • Paris accounts for 20% of the French workforce • Its an area that manufacturers products such as... Chanel Fashion Cartier Jewellery Yves Saint Laurent perfume Citreon Cars

Central Business District (CBD) • Is in a section of the city north of the river Seine where busy offices, factories and shops are found. • Specialist educational and academic printing and publishing activities are located close to the Universities in the City. Example the world famous Sorbonne University • Heavy steel Manufacturing (rail, steel and oil refining) is located further out from the city. • Food processing is a major industry in the region, producing cheese, wine and vegetables.

  11. Group Poster Project • In assigned groups of 3 create 3 separate posters on PHYSICAL/HUMAN factors influencing Primary/Secondary Economic Activity in the Paris Basin. Example: 1 group may create 3 separate posters on Physical factors influencing agriculture in The Paris Basin • Person 1 can illustrate Soils and relief in the Paris Basin • Person 2 can illustrate the effect of drainage • Person 3 can illustrate the effects of Climate

  12. Relief and Soils in the Paris Basin – Who’s the best Farmer in the Land? My farm is the best! Located in the centre of the Basin on a low lying flat region with fertile Limon soils. My farm produces wheat! I’m the one to BEAT! I Isla from Ile de France I Chandler from Champagne NON NONNON! My farm c’est le BEST! Pourquoi? The clay covered valleys from chalk ridges in the North East allow me To produce grapes pour wine! The French love Wine! Norman from Normandy FOOLS! I am the best farmer in the land. The soils on my land in the North West are rich fertile Limon soils so I can produce cereals. The maritime climate in the North West also makes the soil wet and heavy and my farm produces dairy products as well! #WINNING!!!

  14. Transport networks such as......allow products to be easily transported to and from the Paris Basin As a result there is a 10 million euro turnover coming into the region
