  2. Renaissance • Renaissance is the French word for “rebirth • Renaissance is the rebirth of interest in learning and art

  3. Humanism • The idea of focusing on improving this world rather than hoping for a better life after death • Humanists studied the ideas of the Greeks and Romans

  4. Printing Press • Invented by Johann Gutenberg in 1455 • Increased literacy • Allowed for the ideas of the Renaissance to spread to large numbers of people

  5. Medici's • A prominent family in Florence • Medici family funded many of the buildings, statues, and paintings that made Florence a center of art during the Renaissance • Created the largest library in Europe bringing in many Greek sources • Supported artists like Donatello, Michelangelo, and Rafael

  6. Michelangelo • Accomplished painter, poet, architect, and sculptor • Painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel • Sculpted the famous David statue Michelangelo Pieta Located at St. Peter’s in the Vatican City

  7. Leonardo da Vinci • “Renaissance Man” – skilled in many fields • Artist, scientist, inventor • Mona Lisa and Last Supper • Exploring Leonardo Da Vinci

  8. William Shakespeare • Best known writer of the Renaissance • His plays mixed humor with drama, and showed the strengths and weaknesses of people • Supported by Queen Elizabeth I

  9. Galileo • Italian physicist, astronomer, astrologer, and philosopher • Improved the telescope • Believed in the theory that the sun was the center of the universe • Invented the thermometer and was the first to use the telescope to observe the skies

  10. Reformation • began on October 31, 1517 • Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany • Martin Luther made a translation of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into German

  11. Reformation • Began in response to the growing sense of corruption and administrative abuse in the church. • led to the creation of various Protestant churches • Two Reformers – Martin Luther and John Calvin Martin Luther John Calvin
