  2. OPERATIVE SET UP-POST OFFICES Each Postal Division consists of one or more Head Office, a number of Sub Offices and branch offices. Head Office It is the Chief of a group of Postal Offices consisting of itself and its subordinate offices called Sub and Branch Offices. The Monetary transactions of the group are consolidated in the Head Office. It is directly responsible to the Postal Accounts Office for the maintenance of accounts and submission of monthly statements and returns. It may be in charge of a Higher Selection Grade (HSGII) Postmaster, HSG-I Postmaster or a Senior Postmaster (Gazetted). The principal HPO at the circle Head quarters is called General Post Office (GPO)

  3. Sub post office It is a Post Office subordinate to a HO. Its monetary transactions are incorporated in the accounts of its Head Office. The Officer in charge of a Sub Office is called Sub Postmaster (SPM) Ex – Avaniapuram SO, PTC SO

  4. There are different kinds of Sub Post Offices. EDSO: it is in charge of an GDS( GraminDakSewa) SPM. ‘C’ class SO: A SO without PA only with one SPM. B class SO: SO with one SPM and one PA A class SO: SO with one SPM and two PAs. LSG SO: SO with one SPM and three or more PAs Town SO: A sub office in a town or its suburbs where there is also a Head Office.

  5. Night Post Office • Some important Post Offices have extended working hours up to 8.30 pm on weekdays. • On Sundays and holidays they work for limited hours but not beyond 6.00 pm. • Such post offices are called Night Post Offices. Ex – Chennai GPO

  6. Branch Office: Lower than in status than Sub Office. It is in direct account with a Head Office or a Sub Office. The monetary transactions of BO are incorporated in the accounts of its Account Office. Ex – SN College BO No-delivery PO: A Post office which does not perform delivery work. Army PO: These Post Offices serve defence personnel. These are also known as Central Base PO. There are two CBPO. One at Delhi (1 CBPO or c/o 56 APO) and other at Calcutta (2 CBPO or c/o 99 APO) HO status. FPO: Field POs are coming under 1 CBPO or 2 CBPO. Sub Office status. Foreign PO: Foreign POs deal with the incoming and outgoing foreign mail.

  7. Universal Postal Union: Established in 1875 in Berne gets guidelines for free flow of Mail between countries. It is a special agency of UN. Our India Post is a member of this Union.

  8. Postal Accounts Offices: Our department handle huge amount of cash which either belongs to the customers or which has to be credited to the government accounts. For the purpose of auditing the accounts of the department of post there are postal accounts offices. Here is a list of all the Postal Accounts Offices, their abbreviations and their jurisdiction. Every Head Post Office should send periodical returns of various accounts items to the Accounts Office of its area.
