  1. Thriller Thriller movies are usually exciting and sometime can contain scary elements. The main elements of thriller are: Anticipation, suspense, action, tension and excitment

  2. Thrillers characteristics Thrillers often take place wholly or partly in exotic settings such as foreign cities, deserts, polar regions, or high seas. The heroes in most thrillers are frequently "hard men" accustomed to danger: law enforcement officers, spies, soldiers, seamen or aviators. However, they may also be ordinary citizens drawn into danger by accident. While such heroes have traditionally been men, women have become increasingly common.Thrillers often overlap with mystery stories, but are distinguished by the structure of their plots. In a thriller, the hero must thwart the plans of an enemy, rather than uncover a crime that has already happened. Thrillers also occur on a much grander scale: the crimes that must be prevented are serial or mass murder, terrorism, assassination, or the overthrow of governments. Jeopardy and violent confrontations are standard plot elements. While a mystery climaxes when the mystery is solved, a thriller climaxes when the hero finally defeats the villain, saving his own life and often the lives of others. In thrillers influenced by film noir and tragedy, the compromised hero is often killed in the process.

  3. Thriller characters Characters in Thrillers usually contain ordinary people in ordinary places, but with extraordinary events. A good example of this would be Collateral. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BDx6ZPHV4w Characters in thriller commonly attempt solving, or are involved in, a mystery. Characters in Thrillers include; a hero (sometimes a detective) character who is trying to solve the mystery, a villain (possibly an enemy of the hero e.g. A evil twin) who is causing the problem, a victim who has been effected by the villain in some way (possibly has been murdered by the villain).

  4. MISE-EN-SCENE • Mise-en-Scene is an expression used in theatre and film to describe the design aspects of a production. It has been called film criticism's "grand undefined term" because the term has many different meanings.

  5. Mise-en-scene – what it includes Props Setting/location Costumes Makeup Figure expression Lighting/colour Iconography is an aspect of genre. We expect to see certain objects within the mise-en-scene of a particular genre.

  6. Examples of mise-en-scene in thrillers These are both typical of a thriller gangster movie. Guns and big cars which both represent power. These are all typical of a horror film. Masks, knives and blood. Gloves are typical of crime and horrors

  7. Costume and makeup give information to the audience about the following; • Historical context • Futuristic • Social status • Character situations and changes • Emphasise a particular character within a scene Costume and makup This is a picture from Shutter Island. The costumes in this show us that they are important as they are smart and resemble detectives

  8. Lighting/colour • Colour is read differently by different people but we all attribute meaning or connotations to different colours • Lighting in a scene generates mood and atmosphere • Generally in a Thriller the lighting will be dark. This is an example of low-key lighting
