REGION The Maidu were a Native American tribe that lived in Northern Central California in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. They lived near the American Rivers and Sacramento. In there region they had rivers, lakes, valleys, and foothills. Summer was hot and Winter was cold. It snowed in the Winter.
HOMES Maidu made homes semi-underground in hills and mountains. They made big houses 20 to 40 feet long. To make houses they tied branches together, brushed dirt, made holes, and made it with logs. They had different houses for Summer and Winter. In Winter they had bark houses. In Summer they lived in temporary brush houses.
FOOD The Maidu ate lots of foods. Maidu ate acorns, berries, seeds, fish, and other foods. To get food they hunted, fished, and picked. Some Maidu were called Digger Indians because they dug for food.
JOBS Maidu Men and Women had different jobs. Maidu girls made baskets for there babies. Boys dug, hunted, and fished. If a boy gives a girl some gifts and the family likes them and the boy stays with them 6 months they will marry. Men made weapons such as axes, arrows, and bows. Women gathered plants to eat and made sure none were poisonous.
CLOTHES The Maidu made their clothes. Maidu boys wore breech clothing made from buckskin or wire grass. Maidu women wore deerskin moccasins. In the winter they wore deerskin leggings and fur robes. They had blankets from goose/duck fe4athers. They put grass in their shoes two keep them warm. Women wore baskets on their heads. They also wore bone, shell, feather, and wood jewelry. Men put tattoos on their upper bodies. They put tattoos on them by using sharp fish or bird bone.
CELEBRATIONS Maidu burned dead bodies with their stuff on the anniversaries of the dead to mourners exchanged shell money.
INTERESTING FACTS One interesting fact is Maidu made baskets, bowls, shallow trays, and seed beaters. Maidu made colors from nature such as red bark, roots, leaves, and grass. Maidu also danced around a fire.
