  1. CONTEXT FOR ACADEMIC STRATEGIC PLANNING AT UM • Foundation for upcoming Accreditation process • Identify key issues and opportunities to address over the next five years • Guide for prioritization and decision making

ACADEMIC STRATEGIC PLANNING • Timeframe: April 2008 through June 2009 • Steering Committee Team: Representatives from every College/School, Faculty Senate, Planning and Budgeting office, and Student Support Services • Chair - Carol Brewer, CAS Associate Dean • Committee composition includes faculty, students, staff, and administrators • First meeting of the team is next week • Process: Inclusive, transparent, interactive with other sectors that intersect with Academic Affairs (e.g., IT, Research…)

MAJOR STEPS IN STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS • Organization - Spring 2008 • Define process • Plan for coordination with Accreditation • Environmental Scan - Summer 2008 • Develop background information (data, reports, etc.) and context for the Academic Strategic Plan • Prepare first report to be presented at the beginning of new academic year • Identify Strategic Issues - Early Fall 2008 • Key issues to address in plan • Align with UM mission and vision

MAJOR STEPS, continued • Strategic Goal Setting - Late Fall 2008 • Define goals and indicators for each strategic issue • Articulate Key Actions - Winter 2009 • Identify a practical set of clear actions to achieve strategic goals • Articulate resources needed for achieve goals • Develop Annual Review Plan - Spring 2009 • Timeline and process for campus input and discussion of plan annually • Metrics for annual reviews • Publication of Academic Strategic Plan - Summer 2009

COMMUNICATION AND PARTICIPATION • Web Site - Archive and Information (launch anticipated early summer 2008) • Planning Documents • Newsletter and Blog • Lists of Participants • Web-based surveys and input opportunities • Faculty Senate - Regular updates from Brewer and FS representative on committee • Task Forces to Address Strategic Issues - Please serve when called on • Forums - broad campus input several times during process
