  3. Pinna • Medical name = Auricle • Function • To catch sound waves • To hold our hearing aids, glasses • Earrings

  4. Ear Canal • Medical name = External auditory meatus • Function • To funnel the sound waves down towards our ear drum. • Contains ear wax (cerumen)

  5. Ear Wax • Medical name: Cerumen • Function • It keeps the ear canals moist • If not ears will be itchy and irritated • It protects against infection • Traps bacteria/fungi from getting past the ear canal • It protects against flying bugs and crawling insects • The sticky surface traps the insects and other debris

  6. MIDDLE EAR • Ear Drum (Tympanic Membrane) • Bones (Ossicles) • Hammer (Maleus) • Anvil (Incus) • Stirrup (Stapes) • Oval Window • Eustachian Tube

  7. Eardrum • Medical name = Tympanic Membrane • Function • Captures the sound waves and changes them into vibrations • As thin as a tissue!

  8. Bones • Medical name = Ossicles • Function • To pass the sound vibrations from the eardrum to the oval window • The 3 smallest bones in the body! • Hammer = Maleus • Anvil = Incus • Stirrup = Stapes

  9. Oval Window • Medical name = vestibular window • Function • As the stapes beats against the oval window it opens up and a pressure wave allows liquid in the cochlea to move. • When the liquid in the cochlea moves the hair cells begin to move.

  10. Eustachian Tube • No medical name • Function • To allow air to flow in an out of our ear. • Does not help us to hear • If not functioning properly it will cause a hearing loss!

  11. INNER EAR • Cochlea • Hair cells (Cilia) • Hearing Nerve (Auditory Nerve) • Semi-circular canals

  12. Cochlea • No medical name • Function • The organ of corti is stored in the cochlea. • Hair cells and fluid are also stored in the cochlea • Cochlea – from the Latin word snail

  13. Hair Cells • Medical name = Cilia • Function • To transfer the sound vibrations into nerve impulses
