  1. Name______________________ Light Energy & Angle of Insolation Directions: Record the Angle of Insolation for the following cities on the planet. You will do this measuring on a globe, calculating, and by research. • Part 1: Measuring Angle of Insolation Using Globes: • Tape a 20 cm string from the location on the globe to the center of the bulb. • Tape another string to the Tropic of Cancer (Jun 21st) to the bulb. • Use a protractor to measure the angle. • Substract this angle from 90 to determine the angle of insolation, and record on the table below. • Repeat the process by calculating angle of insolation from the Tropic of Capricorm (Dec 21st) and the equator (Mar 21st & Sept 21st).

  2. Part 2: Calculating the angle of insolation at noon • Measure the number of degrees of latitude separating that location from the latitude that is receiving direct vertical rays (90°). Record as “Relative Latitude”, and be sure to pay attention to N or S. • Then subtract that value from 90° to calculate the angle of insolation. Data Table 1: Direct Sun Rays (90°)Throughout the Year.

  3. Part 3: Research the angle of insolation: See the webpage for the link… http://wps.prenhall.com/esm_lutgens_atmosphere_9/0,7475,631812-,00.html – Click on Interactive Lab 1 and adjust date and latitude to record angle of insolation. Figure 1: Earth in Space and Angle of Insolation
