Weekly Agenda 1/23/13 • In the “Do” section, write today’s learning target and additional information: • Analyze historical film for author’s purpose, perspective, and theme, citing specific details that create meaning. • Set academic and personal goals for this week. • Get out last week’s agenda and complete reflection. Turn in agendas from last week. • Email/Turn in Analysis Essay with proofreading sheet attached.

  2. Quickwrite • In fiction, authors use figurative language, imagery, symbolism and tone to convey their purpose, perspective and theme. What methods do you think filmmakers use to convey their purpose, perspective and theme in historical film? • Author’s Purpose: What an author is attempting to accomplish through a literary work (Persuade, Inform, Entertain). • Author’s Perspective: The experiences an author has had that creates a personal belief system and drive their purpose and tone. • Theme: The insight about human life that is revealed in literary work.

Read over first 10-15 questions so you know what will be asked. • As we watch, think about how modern film acts as a vehicle to both inform about and shape history. • What specific techniques do filmmakers use to influence the thoughts and ideas of viewers?

Theme • THEME: The insight about human life that is revealed in a literary work. • Themes are rarely stated outright. • Readers have to infer the theme after considerable thought. • DIFFERENT THAN SUBJECT • Subject: Growing Up • Theme: For most young people, growing up is a process that involves the pain of achieving self knowledge. • Theme must be stated in at least one sentence; most themes are complex enough to require several sentences, or even an essay.

Some Questions You Had • Can we watch another [film] like that? • How many days did [Alice] go without food? • Did [Alice] ever get with the newspaper guy? • Did Alice and Lucy ever get to vote? • Did this ALL really happen? • Was it the guy who took his kids away from his wife that posted Alice Paul’s note into the post? • Did they really get mistreated like in the movie when they were in prison? • Why didn’t she want to eat? Did Alice really get force fed? Why? • What other causes did Alice Paul fight for? • Why did President Wilson not want women to have the right to vote? • Why did men not want to allow women their own rights? • Why did women not have freedom from the beginning? • Did Emily Leighton leave her husband? • I didn’t realize women went through that much to get the right to vote.

Close Reading • Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from text. • What things are said outright in Iron Jawed Angels? • What things can we infer and conclude that the “author” is saying about the subjects (from yesterday)? • What “specific textual evidence” do we see that supports our inferences and conclusions?

Sources • What is a primary source? • A primary source refers to a source from the time period who had first-hand experience with the topic. • If you can, you want to find news articles from the time of Alice Paul (etc.). • I can help you if you need it. • What is NOT a primary source? • Wikipedia, Ask.com or About.com, Google Images • However, these are good places to start. • Some other good places to start: • Library of Congress • PBS • \Some images can be found at Retronaut.com
