  2. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups People like to be treated with respect in everyday situations as well as on formal occasions. List five ways of showing others respect in everyday life.

  3. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups People do not always give other people the respect they deserve. Describe three examples of situation in which someone has not shown another person respect.

  4. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups Do you think people have to earn respect? Or does every person deserve at least some level of respect? Explain your ideas in a paragraph and be sure to say why or why not.

  5. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups Some people feel they are discriminated against in stores. They feel that they do not receive the same respectful treatment that others do. Have you ever experienced such a situation? How did you feel? What assumptions did the other person make? What did you do about the situation, if anything? Share you experience in a paragraph. If you not experienced this kind of situation, tell about when it might happen and answer the questions above for that fictional situation.

  7. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups Seats on several school buses recently were vandalized by students. The bus company has installed vide cameras on the buses, and the destruction has stopped. The vandals showed a lack of respect through their actions. What kind of respect did they lack? Explain.

  11. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups Imagine that your friends want to explore an old building that has been condemned by the Board of Health. There is a posted sign stating “No Trespassing.” What are the consequences of not respecting the law in this case? Explain.

  12. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups Some holidays celebrate religious, historic, or traditional events, objects, or people. Imagine that you can create a new holiday. Who or what would you honor with your holiday? Describe the type of celebration or events that would mark this holiday. Explain why your subject is worthy of such respect.

  13. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups In recent years, textbook publishers have begun using inclusive language in their books. Inclusive language tries to eliminate bias based on gender. For example, where you would have once seen fireman, you now read firefighter. Instead of chairman, you have a chairperson. Rather than stewardesses, flight attendants work for the airlines. Why do you think such changes are being made? Do you think these changes are important? Explain.

  14. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups In a hospital you might see signs that read “Please respect patients’ privacy.” Why do you think these signs are posted? What kind of behavior do you think they are intended to prevent? Share your ideas with classmates.

  16. RESPECT ISN Warm-ups Peer editing means giving a classmate feedback and suggestions about a writing assignment. If you have done peer editing, explain how you show respect for the writer you are helping. If you have not tried peer editing, explain how you would show respect for the writer.
