  2. Diverse Population In order to satisfy the needs of our diverse population Greater Baden Medical Services has increased its Workforce Development efforts.

  3. Interpretation at Greater Baden In House Program: • language assessment • training • shadowing • observation • annual competencies • quarterly meetings.

  4. Interpreter Training Interpreter Training- 48 hours of Community Interpreter Training/Medical Terminology for Interpreters. Training given on-site to In-House Interpreters and is now being offered to external agencies.

  5. Completed first training • We have successfully completed our first training in March 2013. • Issue: Specialized training/certificates awarded gave employees opportunities to take their new skills with them. • How to Resolve issue: suggested HR training policy for the retention of newly trained employees.

  6. Cultural Competence Training • New employee orientation: Include Title VI and Cultural Competence training. 3 hour training. • We have developed a mini curriculum and we also facilitate Kaiser Permanente’s Diversity Health Series Videos. • The most important aspect of the training is to be able to show participants how they can apply what they learn at work.

  7. Issue: Generalizations • We avoid generalizations in the training. Focus not only on similarities with other cultures but also individual differences within same culture. • The videos are helpful in depicting minority populations in a healthcare setting; we must offer ample opportunities for employees to discuss how they can apply training at work.

  8. Suggestion for Improvement • Give training to ALL employees. • Provide different times/days that work for different schedules. • Extend training. Have trainer attend a week long Training of Trainers on Cultural Competence.

  9. Trainings Suggestions • Suggestion to have a Training for providers in How To Work with an Interpreter, tips for running a smooth encounter, list of DO NOTs and cultural competence. • Success: Curriculum developed • Issue: Being able to establish this training organization wide. • Resolved?: In progress

  10. HR Hiring Policy/Bilingual Positions • HR Hiring policy for bilingual positions is constantly revised. • Any employee wishing to utilize their non English language will have to go through a language assessment through an external agency.
