  2. Flash news: fake engagements are now undergoing The Purge on Instagram. That means that all fake accounts and their respective likes and follows are to be wiped clean — no more artificial boosts for those aiming to build their Insta reputation. The social media platform recently announced that it has developed a machine learning tool update that can identify accounts that use third-party apps to falsify their follower count and other interactions. The inauthentic activities are set to be removed from accounts. Additionally, the users will be asked to reset their passwords, as subscribing to these apps can cause risks in security. “Every day people come to Instagram to have real experiences, including genuine interactions. It is our responsibility to ensure these experiences aren’t disrupted by inauthentic activity,” Instagram wrote in a blog post. Aside from notifying affected users of a fake interaction purge, Instagram is also advising other users who may have unknowingly given out their login information to third-party apps. They will also then be suggested to change their passwords. Third party apps are popular for some users because while the likers and followers may be fake, the boost in numbers still help posts bump up in algorithms and thus, seen by more people. This act is an offence against Instagram's Community Guidelines and Terms of Use, however, and is all the more reason for the platform to weed out falsified interactions actively. That isn't the end of Instagram's efforts either. The company mentioned that this news is "just another step", and that they are future plans for additional updates that are focused on tackling inauthentic activity.
