  1. What Would It Be Like? Pre-Teaching Novel Unit

  2. Imagine this… What would it be like to wake up in a room the size of your bathroom, on a single mattress you share with your three siblings? Did I mention that none of you have bathed in a week and the only bedding you have old scraps of blankets and sheets?

  3. Imagine this… What would it be like if after you woke up, you had to get ready for a 10-12hour shift working hard labour with little more than a dry cracker and some warm milk (not warm from heating but warm because you have no fridge and it sits in a bucket on the floor covered in flies). Forget about a shower too, there are none. If you’re lucky maybe a splash of cold water.

  4. Imagine this… What would you do if you had to work for 10-12hours straight instead of going to school. You have no lunch and very little access to water. All you can think about is the hopeful possibility that there might be some watery soup waiting for you when you get home. Did I mention you work in one of the most dirty, smelly, unhygienic places known to man?

  5. Group Activity In your groups, have a look at your collection of photographs. • Who is in the picture? • Where are they? • What are they doing?

  6. Group Activity Collectively decide on ONE photograph that has the most impact on you. Together you are going to write SHORT ‘Day in the Life Of’ on ONE person in this photograph. You need to give the following details: • Name/Age • Occupation • Describe what a typical day is like for your subject.

  7. Do Now! Put yourself in your subjects shoes from the group activity. It has been an especially hard day today. You have returned home later than usual to find that the food you had prepared that morning for dinner has been scavenged by the local dogs. Write a journal entry expressing your emotions at this moment, how your day has gone and your aspirations for the future.

  8. Highlight the EMOTIVE words in the article. Choose three emotive words and replace them with a less emotive SYNONYM. Write the entire sentence in your books with the change of word. What is the effect of this change? In pairs, discuss what you think is the MOST shocking thing in this article.

  9. A Persuasive Letter? Read this imaginary letter from ‘President Ziya’ in which he tries to justify why it is acceptable to have children working on dumpsites.

  10. Let’s Examine It President Ziya uses lots of persuasive effects to convince the reader that he’s right. These techniques are called rhetorical devices. Can you spot some of them? Copy out one quotation for each of these: • A rhetorical question: • Statistic: • Emotive language: • Pronouns: • Anything else?
