  5. About the Facility • Chrysalis Center was founded by Kayj Nash Okine, Ph.D. and Kelly Broadwater, M.A. in June 2003. • Prior to starting the practice, both counselors worked closely together at the UNC-Wilmington Counseling Center and were part of the Eating Disorder Treatment Team on campus. Their decision to branch out into private practice was driven by a desire to reach out to the community and be able to provide counseling and eating disorder treatment to a variety of populations. • Both psychologists are licensed professionals and members of the International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals and the National Eating Disorders Association.

  6. What does Chrysalis mean? Chrysalis is literally the cocoon that sustains and encases a caterpillar as it develops into a butterfly. The nurturing environment of the chrysalis is what enables this amazing transformation to occur. The name was chosen for the practice by Kelly and Dr. Okine to represent the significant change and growth that clients can experience in the healing setting of therapy.

  7. “Our Philosophy” “We believe that a supportive, healing environment is essential in order for change and growth to occur. We seek to offer such an environment to clients and help them create that in their lives and relationships.” “Our therapeutic approach is empathic, nonjudgmental, and interpersonal in nature. We strive to help clients understand themselves and the roots of their problems, to identify and change dysfunctional behaviors and patterns, and to develop more effective strategies for coping. We utilize an integrative treatment model which incorporates interpersonal, relational, and cognitive-behavioral techniques and is individualized to each client. “

  8. Population Served There is an array of clinical services for male and female adolescents (ages 10 and up) and adults. Problems treated include (but are not limited to): • Eating Disorders • Anxiety Disorders • Depression and other Mood Disorders • Women's Issues • Relationship Problems • Trauma • Sexual Abuse and Assault • Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder • Substance Abuse

  10. Eating Disorder Treatment A hallmark of the practice is a comprehensive eating disorder treatment program. Clients may participate in any or all of the following components: • Eating disorder assessments and treatment recommendations • Specialized Individual, Group, and Family Counseling • On-site Nutritional Counseling • Psycho-educational workshops • Referrals to, and collaboration with, medical doctors and psychiatrists

  11. Practicum Experience • Administrative Assistant: filing, faxing, answering phones, booking/confirming appointments, verification of benefits, etc. • Psych Evaluations: Administration and scoring of EDI-3, MCMI and ADHD testing • Groups: sit in on College-Age Eating Disorder Group, Gastric Bypass Preparation Group and Veterans Group (post surgery) • Supervision: sit in on required weekly supervision between Dr. Okine and the other clinicians in which clients are discussed and various treatment plans evaluated.

  12. My Thoughts… I would definitely highly recommend this facility to anyone as a practicum experience as well as for therapy. Each clinician is passionate, sincere and dedicated to their clients as well as to the practice of psychology. The environment is one that is comfortable and conducive to healing as well as learning. This experience has showed me how a successful practice should be run, as well as what is necessary to be a caring and effective professional. Each day I spend at the Chrysalis Center with these women is a not only a valuable learning experience, but a gift.

  13. The power of growth is in relationships. Even when life seems frail, When there is darkness and pain, Confusion and complexity, The loving and caring of another person Can add sunlight and warmth To the growth power of both And to this growth we are pledged -Anonymous Author
