  1. CA Standards 7.0: Students verify that a point lies on a line, given and equation of a line. Students are able to derive linear equations by using that point-slope formula. Objective: Given a slope and a point, students will be able to write an equation of a line using the slope-intercept equation. Agenda for 10/19/11 1.) Warm-up 2.)   2. Point Slope Ex 1: What is the Slope-Intercept Form of the equation of the line containing the point (3,6) and having a slope of 4? • What do we know? Use y=mx+b • Slope (m): m = 4 So if y=mx+b Then6=4●3+b b = -6 • Y-intercept (b): Not yet 6=12+b • (3, 6) means • x = 3 and y = 6 -12 -12 -6=b Thus y=4x–6

  3. Point Slope Ex 2: What is the Slope-Intercept Form of the equation of the line containing the point (1,7) and having a slope of -1? • What do we know? Use y=mx+b • Slope (m): m = -1 So if y=mx+b Then7=-1●1+b b = 8 • Y-intercept (b): Not yet 7=– 1 +b • (1, 7) means • x = 1 and y = 7 +1 +1 8=b Thus y=- x+8 1

Use y=mx+b • Slope (m): m = -2 So if y=mx+b Then-5=-2●4+b b = 3 • Y-intercept (b): Not yet -5=-8+b • (4, -5) means • x = 4 and y = -5 +8 +8 3=b Thus y=-2x+3
