The Middle Colonies * Map of the 13 Original Colonies ~Please get your map from the Roanoke Tabloid ~Please use the map on page 61 ~Please complete your map of the 13 Original Colonies ~ Include: ~ The Colonies ~ The Great Lakes ~ The Ocean ~The Appalachian Mountains ~ The Mississippi River ~ Please color code the Colonies

  6. The Middle Colonies • New Netherland: • Modern day New York • Originally explored by the Dutch in 1609 • Established trade with the Iroquois through Fort Orange (Albany) • 1621: Dutch East India Company established • 1625: New Amsterdam established (Modern New York City)

The Middle Colonies • New Netherland: • Was a major fur trading colony • Was slow to attract Dutch people • Attracted Germans, French, Scandinavians • Protestants, Catholics, Muslims, Jews • With the wide variety of ethnicities and religions caused one visitor to call it : “Confusion of tongues”

The Middle Colonies • New Netherland: • English eventually wanted to control New Netherland • King Charles authorized the capture of the colony by force, but the governor of New Netherland simply gave up. • The Duke of York now owned the area and named it: • New York • Names New Jersey after the British isle of Jersey

The Middle Colonies • Pennsylvania: • Was so named after William Penn • The land was given to a supporter of the new king, Charles II • The king insisted the land be called “Penn’s Woods” • William Penn eventually received more land from the Duke of York. • This land eventually became Delaware

We are watching to give you information on the founding fathers. 2) We will learn about the significance of major historical locations, the founding fathers and major events.
