2. Program Information • Our four year program is now program number 411 not 410. 411 is the program that will state on your diploma, “Bachelors of Science in Automotive Technology” • See our Website. It has been updated • Our Student Society – need volunteers.

3. Graduate Expectancies What Employers are looking for * ASE certification * Technical experience – the more the better * Communication skills – verbal, written, & PC * Team oriented, cooperative, durable * A degree = AAS or BS * Skills that many in our industry are weak in: Electricity,Automatic trans, and Hybrids.

4. Department’s Mission • Prepare students to compete successfully in the automotive workforce or continue their education in a higher degree program. • Strengthen the automotive workforce by providing well trained, honest employees who exemplify the high ideals and standards of the church in their chosen professions. • To become good providers for their families and to contribute to the Church and their communities’.

5. Department Scholarship $500.00 is available to students who are new to the program. All majors are awarded this during their first two semesters in the program. *To qualify: 1. Students must be enrolled in TWO Auto classes each semester 2. Be a 346 or 411 or 410 Major 3. Write a thank you letter. You will be instructed about this in a return e-mail through your byui e-mail account. *To apply electronically, go to: Scholarships@byui.edu List your name, I # and that you are applying for the “automotive scholarship” *Brother Ken Jackson in the Financial Aide & Scholarship Office @ #2399 is the contact person for these funds if you have any questions.

Department Scholarships continued There are additional department scholarships: *These are based upon student performance in the automotive classes. *Department faculty decide who qualify for these funds. *The money is deposited into student accounts and is recognized at our department social Winter Semester.

7. Academic Competitiveness andSMART Grants These are two different grants available to students 1. Academic Competitiveness grants are available to every freshman and sophomore in most any university program. *Freshman are awarded up to $750 per year. * Sophomores up to $1300 to per year 2. SMART grants are available to students in science, engineering and technology degree programs. • SMART grants award up to $4000 per year for juniors and seniors • To get this you must be eligible for Pell grants and have a 3.0 GPA • Must be full time student, US citizen, and a high school graduate • See financial aid office for more details • Education majors are not eligible for these grants

8. BYU-I GPA scholarships Soph: Full = 3.9 ½ = 3.8 ¼ = 3.7 Jr: Full = 3.85 ½ = 3.75 ¼ = 3.65 Sr: Full = 3.8 ½ = 3.7 ¼ = 3.6 *This applies after 30 credits *This money automatically shows up in your BYU- Idaho account / no paper work.

Department Business • When ordering parts or communicating with anyone outside of campus = be courteous. *People will judge us and the university by our conduct. *Do we not believe in the ‘Golden Rule’? • We, as instructors, may have high expectations… but it’s for your benefit ** see Success Stories on department website. • Patience and hard work is what brings great rewards.

15. Career Information • Read department e-mails (From Bro. Spratling) • These indicate when there are: • Information meetings (Lithia, Smith Group, Knight) • Career Fair dates (every October and March) • Job placement information • Management positions in a car store are in the areas of: Accounting, service, parts, operations, sales. • Manufacturers are requesting that their dealers build more service bays.

16. Philosophy of learning • Mastery of automotive technology is possible for those who take responsibility of their learning. • Learning is an active process on the part of the learner • When learning is based on faith in Christ, content can be understood and mastered. • There are times that we must work alone and times that we need to work with others.
