  1. IIST 523: Fundamentals of Information Technology Week 2 – Computer hardware & software, file management, text editing, Power Point presentation

  2. Agenda • Hardware & Software • Algorithm & Programs • Menus • Definitions of terms • File and Folder/Directory Management • Text Editing/Power Point presentation

  3. Hardware • What is hardware? • Physical parts • Two types of personal computers (PCs) • Component based & monolithic • Processor Box • Motherboard, aka printed circuit board • Holds daughter boards (or cards) • Processor • Memory – integrated circuit, aka microchip • Random Access Memory (RAM) • Read Only Memory (ROM) • Hard disk (magnetized disk) • Monitor (Bit-mapped, CRTs, LCDs) • Color (RGB, Pixels)

  4. Motherboard http://www.cse.ucsc.edu/classes/cmpe003/Spring02/motherboard.gif

  5. RAM Hard Disk program ... Input/Output program CPU data ... ... data ... System Bus Hardware(Components of PC)

  6. Processor • A central processing unit (CPU), or sometimes simply processor, is the component in a digital computer that interprets instructions and processes data contained in computer programs. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU)

  7. Memory • Computer storage, computer memory, and often casually memory refer to computer components, devices and recording media that retain data for some interval of time. • In contemporary usage, memory refers to a form of solid state storage known as random access memory (RAM) and sometimes other forms of fast but temporary storage. Similarly, storage more commonly refers to mass storage - optical discs, forms of magnetic storage like hard disks, and other types of storage which are slower than RAM, but of a more permanent nature. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_memory) • Where is your file stored after you “save” it? • What happens if power fails before you “save” your file?

  8. Color • RGB (Red, Green, Blue) - Primary colors of light • Colors on screen created by combining different amounts of primary colors Copyright © 2006 Pearson Addison-Wesley

  9. Pixels • Stands for picture elements • Grid of small units the size of the dot on letter i (font size 10) • Computer draws each pixel in the designated color for the image or figure • The more pixels in each row and column, the smoother and crisper the image (high resolution) • A monitor with a resolution of 1024X800 has 819, 200 pixels

  10. Agenda • Hardware & Software • Algorithm & Programs • Menus • Definitions of terms • File and Folder/Directory Management • Text Editing/Power Point presentation

  11. Software • What is software? • A collection of programs or instructions the computer follows to implement functions • Functions of software • Word processing – creating, editing, & formatting text documents • Spreadsheet – Calculations & analysis of numerical data • Database management – storage and management of structured data • Image editing – creating, editing, & modifying of digital images • Form follows function • Similar software have similar controls/menus/icons

  12. Algorithm • Aka process, a precise and systematic method for solving a problem • Examples: • Arithmetic operations • Sending a greeting card • Getting ready for work/school • Searching for a phone number • Determining when a mouse pointer hovers over a button

  13. Program & Programming • Programming • Writing out steps of an algorithm • Program • An algorithm written in a specific language for a specific set of conditions • Runninga Program • We instruct the computer to run or execute or interpret the program, perform the programs functions

  14. Menus • List of operations the software can perform • Grouped by similarity of operations • Listed in menu bar • Some havedrop down menus • All operations performed by the software are listed in the menu • Could be in the form of icons

  15. Agenda • Hardware &Software • Algorithm & Programs • Menus • Definitions of terms • File and Folder/Directory Management • Text Editing/Power Point presentation

  16. Definitions of terms • Acronyms • CD-RW, GUI, CD-ROM • Jargons • Adware, application • Metaphors • Desktop, windows, clipboard, drop down • Do you know these acronyms? • SCSI, CRT, LCD, RGB, RAM, ROM, CPU

  17. Agenda • Hardware &Software • Algorithm & Programs • Menus • Definitions of terms • File and Folder/Directory Management • Text Editing/Power Point presentation

  18. Assignment 1 • Post your profile in WebCT • Send a WebCT mail to the instructor with an attachment • Send your contact info to the instructor via WebCT mail

  19. Text Editing • Run Notepad • Open a saved file • Using clipboard (select, copy/cut, and paste some text) • Undo/Redo • Font face and size • Search and replace • Using help

  20. Power Point Presentation • Run Microsoft Power Point • Click on File  New and then Choose “From AutoContent Wizard” and follow prompts • Insert, delete, move, duplicate, copy/cut, and paste slides • Undo/Redo • Search and replace • Inserting clip art and images • Changing the design of slides • Using help
