  1. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; D & C Sec 36:2h …and it is even as I am: I say unto you, Be one; and if ye are not one, ye are not mine. D & C Sec 38:6a

  2. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Conference Representation • What is the history of “Conference Representation” during the “dark and cloudy days” before the Reorganization? • What is the history of “Conference Representation” during the Reorganization? • Can we? Should we? Could we? Represent the members of the body of Christ in a “Conference” of “branches” or “members” in our day?

  3. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Psalm 15 The righteousness of Zion's children. (A Psalm of David.) Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in they holy hill of Zion? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor. In whose eyes a vile person is condemned; but he honoreth them that fear the Lord; sweareth not falsely to hurt any man, and changeth not. He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

  4. THE “REORGANIZED” CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS • Founded on April 6th, 1860. • By our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith Jr. • By prophecy and revelation through Joseph Smith Jr.

  5. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS • By the prophecy and revelation through Joseph Smith III • By prophecy, revelation and the testimonies of many others. Joseph Smith III • By the unanimous vote of the approximately 179 members in attendance at the Amboy, Illinois conference. (A total of about 300 people were in attendance, not all being members of the church.)

  6. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Joseph Smith Jr. The Reorganized Church (RLDS) is the re-organization of the original church founded on April 6, 1830 by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through Joseph Smith Jr., father of Joseph Smith III.

  7. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS HISTORY The RLDS Church actually begins before its official founding date of April 6, 1860. Members of the Reorganized Church point to Joseph Smith, Jr. as the founder of the original church and that the events of his life in the 1820's and 1830's are extremely important and significant to the church's history and doctrinal beliefs, as well as the succession to priesthood authority.

  8. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS The real history of the RLDS Church (as a successor entity) actually begins with the death of Joseph Smith, Jr. in 1844. As Gordon Fraser explains, "With the death of Joseph Smith, the entire church was thrust into a state of chaos, with a dozen potential leaders contending for the mantle of the Prophet" (Sects of the Latter-day Saints, p. 16). Many of these leaders began their own churches, each claiming to be the only true church, as originally founded by Joseph Smith, Jr.

  9. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Some of these leaders include Brigham Young, who led many of the Saints from Nauvoo, Illinois to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah to begin what is now known as the Mormon Church. The Mormons of Utah kept the original name of the church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. (Commonly called the Mormons). James J. Strang traveled to Beaver Island, Michigan and had himself declared King by his followers. Sidney Rigdon, an early associate of Joseph Smith's, called his group the Church of Christ. William Bickerton began The Church of Jesus Christ (or Church of Christ, Bickertonites) after a brief association with Rigdon. Another important leader was Grandville Hedrick who began The Church of Christ, Temple Lot. Brigham Young (Divergent Paths of the Restoration, pp. 31, 37, 40-41, 76 and 89)

  10. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Other early followers of Joseph Smith were Jason Briggs, Zenos Gurley and William Marks. These three men are most often credited with organizing the group that would eventually be called the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This small remnant of believers in Joseph Smith and the original doctrines, formed, because they did not accept the so-called revelations that implemented polygamy nor did they believe the claims of others to be the prophet for their time.

  11. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Years of Confusion and Disorganization (1844-1860) It appeared that Joseph’s death left the church without any clear leadership. Many believed that Joseph Smith Jr. had designated his son, Joseph Smith III, to be his successor; however, "Young Joseph" was only eleven years old when his father was killed. Some decided to wait until "Young Joseph" grew old enough to take his rightful place in leadership. Others followed leaders with varying claims to leadership, scattering in all directions. Still others decided they had had enough and found other religious homes. As the years passed, many of those who had left Nauvoo with various groups began to gather together. They had tried to find leaders who followed the original doctrines but concluded that none existed. So they banded together in a loose affiliation they called the “New Organization”.

  12. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Jason Briggs  and Zenos Gurley  were two of the leaders in this organization. Briggs had been involved in other splinter groups but found disappointment in each. In 1851, he had a spiritual experience on his farmland prairie that gave him new hope for recovering the spirit, beliefs, purpose, and structure of the original church. He wrote his experience and began to share it with friends. Although some had some questions about his authority to receive a revelation for the entire group, they prayed and received testimony of its truthfulness. Jason Briggs

  13. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Zenos Gurley had a similar experience. In 1851, he had a visionary experience in which he was told that God would raise up a prophet. Eventually he received a copy of Briggs’ revelation, and the two groups joined together in 1852 to wait for a descendant of Joseph Smith to become their prophet. Zenos Gurley

  14. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Joseph Smith III was only eleven years old when his father was murdered. After that experience, he had nothing to do with any of the splinter groups that left Nauvoo, nor did he have any interest initially in joining with the “New Organization”. When Briggs and Samuel Gurley came to visit him in 1856 to invite him to become church president, he was not flattered. His initial reaction was to reject their invitation strongly. After further reflection, he told them that before he could accept their invitation, he would have to have a testimony of his own. Joseph Smith III

  15. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS During the next four years, he struggled with this decision, finally receiving his testimony of the rightness of the call in the fall of 1859. He and his mother attended the 1860 conference in Amboy, Illinois, where he shared a statement about his struggle. Then he was presented to the people and unanimously accepted as their "prophet, seer, and revelator." Emma Smith

  16. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS The Law of Lineage: When William B. Smith first came to our place in 1850, presenting the law of lineage and little Joseph’s right to the presidency of the Church, mother accepted it as in the right direction… (Early History of the Reorganization by Apostle Edmund C. Briggs, pg. 53.)

  17. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS [Sec 43:1a] O hearken, ye elders of my church, and give ear to the words which I shall speak unto you: for, behold, verily, verily I say unto you, that ye have received a commandment for a law unto my church, through him whom I have appointed unto you revelations from my hand. [Sec 43:1b] And this ye shall know assuredly, that there is none other appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations until he be taken, if he abide in me.

  18. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS [Sec 43:2b] and this shall be a law unto you, that ye receive not the teachings of any that shall come before you as revelations, or commandments; and this I give unto you, that you may not be deceived, that you may know they are not of me.

  19. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS [Sec 43:2c] For verily I say unto you, that he that is ordained of me, shall come in at the gate and be ordained as I have told you before, to teach those revelations which you have received, and shall receive through him whom I have appointed.

  20. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS [Sec 27:4c] neither shall anything be appointed unto any of this church contrary to the church covenants, for all things must be done in order and by common consent in the church, by the prayer of faith.

  21. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS • Elders received a commandment for a law unto the church. • Through him who has been appointed. • None other appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations until he be taken, if he abide in me. • This shall be a law unto you. • That ye receive not the teachings of any that shall come before you as revelations. • Or commandments. • That you may not be deceived, that you may know they are not of me.

  22. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS • Those ordained shall come in at the gate. • Ordained as I have told you. • Received through him who has already been appointed.

  23. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Joseph Smith Jr. was appointed by the Lord to be prophet, seer and revelator. He was ordained an elder at the organization of the church on April 6, 1830, and was ordained President of the High Priesthood on January 25, 1832 (Times and Seasons, Vol. 3 page 944-945; Vol. 5 page 624). Joseph Smith Jr.

  24. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS “About my selection by my father to be his successor in office, I remember of being called in his office, or into a room adjoining his office, and receiving the laying on of hands, and a prophetic blessing or setting apart, whatever it may be called. I remember that, and also remember that just before his departure for Carthage, with a number of others, I was called into a room in the Mansion House, and there again received the laying on of hands, and the blessing. I was also present at a meeting in the grove near the temple, and I remember my father laying his hands on my head, and saying to the people that this was his successor, or was to be his successor.” (Testimony of Joseph Smith III - The Temple Lot Case - Page 40-41)

  25. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS “I claim to be his successor by lineal right, and by his blessing, and lastly by the right of selection and appointment. It is not necessarily a birthright to be the President of the Church. It comes by virture of fitness and qualification, I may say, good behavior and the choice of the people, recognizing a call or a right.” (Testimony of Joseph Smith III - The Temple Lot Case - Page 79) Joseph Smith III

  26. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS “My understanding of the law of the church, both of the original and the Reorganized Church, is that the priesthood descends from father to son; it descends to the eldest son. My understanding of the law is that if the legal heir in succession had no fitness for that office, or should apostatize, the highest authority in the church at that time would have the right to take control of the management of the church. If the legitimate heir was an idiot, I should not consider that he had a right or was a fit subject to govern or preside over thechurch. I would consider also that the apostasy of the father would of course destroy the right of the son by inheritance to the office, or to succession.” (Testimony of William B. Smith - The Temple Lot Case - Page 104)

  27. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS “’Young Joseph’,” as he was affectionately called, had two distinct visions and a definite revelation which guided him to follow in his father’s footsteps. The first was in the summer of 1853 when he was 20 years of age and the second in the fall of 1856.” (Testimony of W. W. Blair - The Temple Lot Case - Page 152)

  28. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Joseph Smith stated at the conference in April 1860, "I came not here of myself, but by the influence of the Spirit. For some time past I have received manifestations pointing to the position which I am about to assume". He was chosen by the voice of the people as "Prophet, Seer, and Revelator of the Church of Jesus Christ, and the successor of his father;" and was ordained President of the High Priesthood of the Church. (RLDS Church History, vol. 3, Pages 247-251).

  29. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Frederick M. Smith, son of Joseph Smith III, in harmony with the law given to the church, was appointed by the Lord to be the successor upon Joseph’s death. [Sec 127:8a] Inasmuch as misunderstanding has occurred in regard to the meaning of a revelation hitherto given through my servant Joseph Smith in regard to who should be called to preside in case my servant should be taken away or fall by transgression, [Sec 127:8b] it is now declared that in case of the removal of my servant now presiding over the church by death or transgression, my servant Frederick M. Smith, if he remain faithful and steadfast, should be chosen, in accordance with the revelations given to the church concerning the priesthood. [Sec 127:8c] Should my servant Frederick M. Smith prove unstable and unfaithful, another may be chosen, according to the law already given. Frederick M. Smith

  30. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS …acting under such inspirational impulsions as were given me at the moment, I presented the names of Brethren Israel A. Smith and Lemuel F. P. Curry to fill the vacancies in the First Presidency… D&C 138:1b Israel A. Smith

  31. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS "On May 28, 1952, President Israel A. Smith prepared and signed the following statement and placed it in the hands of his counselor, Elder F. Henry Edwards. After the death of President Smith on June 14, 1958, this document [Section 144] was brought to the attention of the Council of Twelve and other general church officers, and at the World Conference of 1958 it was unanimously approved by the quorums and orders of the priesthood and by the Conference assembly. The Conference ordered its insertion in the Doctrine and Covenants. "Elder William Wallace Smith was ordained as President of the High Priesthood and prophet, seer, and revelator to the church at the Auditorium at Independence, Missouri, on October 6, 1958." (D&C Section 144) W. Wallace Smith

  32. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Provisions in the document submitted to the 1976 World Conference set a new precedent in the procedures for presidential succession in the church. In respect to this matter President W. Wallace Smith wrote in his transmittal letter as follows: "In spite of the precedent which up to now has seen the president of the church remain in office until his death, the time has come for me to name my successor and also to designate the time for him to succeed me as the presiding officer of the church, to Revelator and President of the High Priesthood and the church, subject to the will of the Conference (Doctrine and Covenants 43:2a)." The document names Wallace Bunnell Smith as prophet and president designate and provides for the retirement of W. Wallace Smith after approximately two years of "spiritual preparation and study" by his successor. D&C 152 Wallace B. Smith

  33. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Wallace B. Smith, in a pastoral letter read to church leaders on September 19, 1995, named his successor to be W. Grant McMurray (The Kansas City Star, Sept. 20, 1995). Mr. McMurray was ordained as the President of the High Priesthood at the 1996 World Conference, on April 15. [Sec 158:1b] To fill the vacancy in the First Presidency, W. Grant McMurray is called into the full-time appointee ministry of the church and should be ordained as a counselor to the President of the High Priesthood and the church and as a member of the First Presidency. To assure a smooth transition in the functioning of the quorum, his ordination should be provided for as soon as practicable. [Sec 160:1] In confirmation of the instructions contained in the pastoral letter dated September 19, 1995, naming him as successor in the office of President, my servant W. Grant McMurray is called and should be ordained without delay as Prophet, Seer, and Revelator, and as President of the High Priesthood and the Church, to the end that prophetic guidance and vision may continue to be brought to the church through the ministry of my Spirit. [Sec 160:2] Upon the ordination of his successor, Wallace B. Smith shall lay down the responsibilities of President and be retired with the title of President Emeritus. [Sec 160:3] Thus it is established according to my will and thus the conditions are fulfilled whereby succession in Presidency in my church is effected. Let it be so. Amen. W. Grant McMurray

  34. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS “That body of twelve men could have done all that the exigency demanded. By the taking of Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball and Willard Richards out of it, the Twelve was disorganized. By the defection of John E. Page, William Smith and Lyman Wight, and removal of the three created into the Presidency, that Twelve upon which Joseph had “rolled the work,” (if such a thing had ever occurred), had been vitiated, and the quorum disorganized.” (The Rejection of the Church by Pres. Joseph Smith)

  35. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Jason W. Briggs writes: "The closing of this conference [April 6-7, 1853] was by a general testimony meeting, in which the various gifts were abundantly poured out; and a special charge given the seven who had been ordained into the Quorum of the Twelve, to take the oversight of the flock in the fear of the Lord, and an impressive warning against becoming heady, with an emphatic reinforcement of the precept, "He that exalteth himself shall be abased." That false spirits, false prophets and false Christs were in the world, and should come among us to deceive, and some should follow them; but that the organization should remain. That the acts of the conference were recorded in heaven, and the faithful should realize all the promises that had been made from the beginning." (RLDS Church History, volume 3, Page 223)

  36. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS Our discussion question is: Conference Representation?

  37. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? Apostle Edmund C. Briggs wrote just before the Re-organization the following: “…I advance the thought to all Saints, that it is wise not to be too ready to accept spirit manifestations until you are sure they are of God, for it is Satan’s cunning to deceive the members in all the branches, as well as individuals in their experiences; and he who passively invites, with anxiety, spirit manifestations without a proper prayerful examination of the teaching of the Spirit, is on dangerous ground.” (Early History of the Reorganization by Apostle Edmund C. Briggs - Page 61)

  38. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? [Sec 3:16a] Behold, this is my doctrine: Whosoever repenteth and cometh unto me, the same is my church; [Sec 3:16b] whosoever declareth more or less than this, the same is not of me, but is against me; therefore, he is not of my church. [Sec 3:17] And now, behold, whosoever is of my church, and endureth of my church to the end, him will I establish upon my Rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against him. [Sec 3:18] And now, remember the words of him who is the life and light of the world, your Redeemer, your Lord, and your God. Amen.

  39. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “I was received into the Reorganized Church, like others, on my original baptism, and became identified with the movement…” (Testimony of Joseph Smith III - The Temple Lot Case - Page 38)

  40. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “The conference was composed of persons who had been members of the old church principally, together with the number that had been baptized by means of their preaching. There were persons there from other States than Illinois; there were members present from Wisconsin, from Iowa, from Illinois, and there may have been members from other States.” “There were present at that conference, that were members of the church, possibly one hundred and fifty (150) people; there may have been more.” (Testimony of Joseph Smith III - The Temple Lot Case – Page 38 – 39)

  41. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “My mother went with me to the Amboy conference in 1860, she was received as a member at the same time I was. She was a member of the original church.” (Testimony of Joseph Smith III - The Temple Lot Case – Page 40)

  42. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “When I went to the Amboy conference in 1860, the first thing done in which I was personally interested was, I made application to be received upon my original membership, and it was so done upon motion and vote, and my mother was received the same way. Both were received as members, and our original membership acknowledged at that time.” (Testimony of Joseph Smith III - The Temple Lot Case – Page 40)

  43. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “From the time of the disorganization of the old church, up to 1860, and 1861, there were two branches of that church that remained intact; …most…members were received into the Reorganized Church.” (Testimony of Joseph Smith III - The Temple Lot Case – Page40)

  44. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “He was not baptized again, for it was not necessary, as all members in good standing in the original church are received in the Reorganized church on their original baptism if they are of good moral character.” (Testimony of W. W. Blair - The Temple Lot Case – Page 152)

  45. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “The conference of 1852 recognized all members who had ever belonged to the old organization as being eligible to membership in the reorganization; that is, all members who had not vitiated their standing by overt acts against the church.” (Testimony of Edmund C. Briggs - The Temple Lot Case – Page 208)

  46. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “Of course they were all independent branches and had no uniform identification one with the other, but at the time of the conference of 1852, there were representatives from all of them assembled there at that conference. There were resolutions passed there to recognize all the branches, wherever six or more members assembled together, who had been members of the old organization, as members of the Reorganized Church.” (Testimony of Edmond C. Briggs - The Temple Lot Case – Page 208)

  47. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “Silas Briggs never came from any branch; he did not have to come from any branch; he was a member of the old organization. Not as a matter of necessity. Anyone who belonged to the old organization had a right to sit in that conference as well as the delegates from branches.” (Testimony of Edmund C. Briggs - The Temple Lot Case – Page 209)

  48. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “Elder Hartshorn…was a member of the branch and that fact would give him a membership in the conference. All members of that branch were members of that conference. They were members of that conference by virtue of being members of the church; that was a law of the church at that time. All the members had a voice in the conference, - had a right to all the privileges of the conference. The law prevailing at that conference, admitted all members of the old church to the privileges of the conference, and they were privileged to take part in the conference; that is a law of the Reorganized Church at the present time, with the exception that they have certain privileges now that were not recognized then as delegates, in the sense in which they are appointed delegates, and then we did not have any such regulations. At that time all the members of the church were entitled to membership in the conferences, and were entitled to all its privileges. There were some of them called ex officio officers.” (Testimony of Edmund C. Briggs - The Temple Lot Case – Page 208)

  49. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “Yes, sir, it is a fact that notwithstanding we have twenty-five thousand (25,000) members, all these twenty-five thousand (25,000) would have been admitted to the conference held here during the present month, if they saw fit to attend;… That privilege inheres to every member of the church, to some as officers, and to others as members of the church, and the whole twenty-five (25,000) would have been entitled to all the privileges of the conference, if they had been present.” (Testimony of Edmund C. Briggs - The Temple Lot Case – Page 210)

  50. THE REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS REPRESENTATION? “Our test of membership is that a person who believes in the doctrine of Christ as taught in the New Testament, would believe in the revelations of God found in the Bible; it is a sequence that follows the basis, and upon that basis, believing in these things, he would eventually believe in the Book of Mormon and the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, as a necessary conclusion.” (Testimony of Edmund C. Briggs - The Temple Lot Case – Pages 210 – 211)
