A Public, “High Research,” “Rural” University • At Flagstaff main campus, 15,000 students; approx. 1,600 graduate students • Online and 35 other Arizona sites, over 7,000 students; approx. 4,000 graduate students • Fiscal Year 2008 Operating Budget of $416 Million • Our emphasis is on undergraduate education, but with a wide range of graduate programs and research that extend to such national concerns as sustainability and bioterrorism. • Annually award 3,000 Bachelor’s, 1,800 Master’s, and 85 Doctorates Student diversity 25%

Benefits of Aligning Self-study with Strategic Planning • Engages campus with institutional mission • Revitalizes regular on-going strategic planning • Promotes assessment as key institutional strategy • Establishes future directions for mission advancement and improvement • Increases relevance of strategic goals for campus community.

Strategic Planning Result New Goal: Sustainability and Stewardship of Place Strategy: Support innovation, stewardship, and engagement in our communities Sample Initiatives • Promote scholarship that increases engagement with local communities and addresses key global challenges. • Engage with partners to address regional economic entrepreneurship, environmental stewardship, urban-rural social well-being, cultural understanding, and Native American priorities. • Lead in the preparation and professional support of Arizona math and science educators.

Forging Alignment between Self-study and Strategic Planning • Overlapping leadership and participation for both endeavors • Alignment an explicit goal for both processes • Establishing parallel frameworks for self-study and strategic planning • Extensive engagement of campus communities and external stakeholders • Simultaneous publication of the self-study and strategic plan.

  6. Promoting Engagement A daylong, university-wide celebration on Aug. 29 will offer faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the university. About 1,500 people turned out for the Campus Picnic.
