  1. Wednesday, May 2ndBell Ringer #17 Compare the picture on page #348 in the text book with the poster on page #353 in textbook. Note 3 similarities AND 3 differences in the two pictures of the same event.

  2. Here is the plan… • Students will understand how propaganda is used to shape image. • Students will match rivals from history and popular culture. • Students will begin to comprehend the origins of the rivalry between the Communists AND the Nationalists in China.

  3. Propaganda • The spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person. • Who uses propaganda? • Source – Merriam-Webster Online

  4. Assignment #1 • Make a list of 5 GREAT rivalries throughout history / popular culture / sports. • Consider (write) what are some things that all good rivalries (whether in sports or history) have in common?

  9. Assignment #2 • Using the textbook pages #347 – 348 AND 351-352 answer the following questions about these two historical rivals on the second side of your handout.

  10. Nationalists • Chiang Kai-Shek and his USA backed government lost control of China. • Chiang and his followers were forced to flee to Taiwan.

  11. Communism

  12. Communists • Mao Zedong and his followers were victorious in the Chinese Civil War that erupted after WWII. • They were heavily influenced by communism in Russia.

  13. 3 Goals of the Revolution • Better Life for the Poor! • Modern Economy. • Restore China’s position as a major world power!

  14. Visual summary • You will be assigned either the “Great Leap Forward” on page 355-356 or the Cultural Revolution from page 356 in textbook. • Read your section only. • Create a visual summary showing the intent (goal), the methods, and the ultimate success or failure of the program.

  15. Two Sides - Positive • Mao united China. • Mao helped to restore China to a place of world power. • Mao is still “officially revered” in modern China.

  16. Two Sides - Negative • Over 20 million Chinese died during Mao’s reign. • Mao did not improve economy / life of most peasants. • Mao’s Red Guard abused/ killed people who disagreed with him.

  17. Read • “A Doctor’s Story” from page #356 – 357 in your textbook. • What are the implications for Chinese society based upon what you have just read?

  19. PULL OUT • Your list of 10 household items with the country of origin (made in…) • When your row is called, go around the room and place the item in the region from which it originated.

  20. MAKE • AT least 1 observation based upon the information collected by your classmates.

  21. BE AFRAID! BE VERY AFRAID • Globalization means that you are no longer competing against the person seated next to you – you are competing against people you have never / will never meet from ALL around the world.

  22. Here is a little story… • I went to Peru where I saw a street vendor selling handmade Peruvian dolls for a few dollars.

  23. A couple months later… • The man set up a website so he could sell his dolls all over the world via the internet.

  24. A couple months after that… • The man outsourced the making of his Peruvian dolls to China where they could be mass produced for a cheaper price.

  25. SEZ’s • In the 1980’s Deng set up Special Economic Zones to attract foreign capital and encourage free enterprise. • Here that sound…?

  26. CHINA • Has 160 cities with at least 1 Million people – Thomas Friedman • You may find that one of these 160 cities in China manufactures most of the world’s eyeglass frames or most of the world’s disposable cigarette lighters

African Proverb • Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. • It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. • Every morning a lion wakes up. • It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. • It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. • When the sun comes up, you better start running.
