  1. Capitals Second Grade Standard WC 1.6 Capitalization Capitalize: words at the beginning of sentences all proper nouns titles and initial of people greetings months and days of the week

  2. The beginning of a sentence is the first letter of the first word in a sentence. This letter should always be capitalized. Here are examples of capitalizing sentence beginnings: • Incorrect: that monkey has an orange tail. • Correct: That monkey has an orange tail. Here are two more examples: • Incorrect: will you get the Sunday paper out of the mailbox? • Correct: Will you get the Sunday paper out of the mailbox? • Incorrect: why is Joe yelling at you? • Correct: Why is Joe yelling at you?

  4. Capitalize all Proper Names While a noun names a person, place, thing, or idea a propernoun gets more specific. Soldier = common noun; Lieutenant Mark Davis = proper noun. • When we go to our favorite restaurant, Applebee’s, we always ask for Betty, our favorite waitress. Restaurant, waitress = common noun; Applebee’s, Betty = proper noun.
