  8. Protection Against Family Violence Act • Territorial Legislation • Allow for Emergency Protection Orders and Protection Orders • Supplements protection orders from other acts or statutes • May be obtained whether there are charges or not

  9. Emergency Protection Orders • Victim does not require a lawyer to obtain an EPO • Last for a period of up to 90 days • Can be obtained with the assistance of: • RCMP (in any community in the NWT) • Alison McAteer House: 1-866-223-7775

  10. Protection Orders • Longer-term order • Victims will need the assistance of a lawyer • May require the perpetrator pay for damaged property or attend counselling

  11. Emergency Protection Order & Protection Order • What if Someone Does Not Follow an Order? • The PAFVA makes it illegal to not follow an order.  • If convicted of breaking an order, preventing someone from performing part of an order, or publishing information not allowed under the Act, a person could face a fine up to $10,000 and six months in jail.
