  3. What is a Chain Letter? • According to the dictionary: • A letter sent to a number of persons, each of whom sends copies to other persons who do likewise.

  4. History of the Chain Letter • Years ago chain letters were popular • They required a stamp • They were processed through the USPS • Required to type, hand write, or Xerox copies of the chain letter

  5. CHAIN LETTERS OF TODAY • Generally involve getting good or bad luck receive a blessing or disaster or even death • Are sent free via mass email • Spam – a new term (mass unwanted email) • Can hide computer viruses • Clogs up the Internet • Annoying • Harassment

  6. THE HOOK • Make money fast • Danger • “Virus Alert” • Save a child • “Good Luck/Bad Luck” • Hit by a snowball • An angel is watching over you • Blessing or disaster • Death

  7. How to STOP Chain Letters • Delete • Do not forward without verifying their accuracy • Consider it a form of junk mail • Report it to the company IT • Report it to the FTC (Postal and Federal Trade Commission)
