    2. HISTORY Training has changed greatly over the last 25 years Was unstructured Lacked accountability Today, training is probably the single most dominant issue other department business is scheduled around

    3. AGENCY INVOLVEMENT Required by law adopted by Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Required to maintain Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating Some simply highly recommended by National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Some required to obtain grants such as Instant Command System classes

    4. BASIC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TCFP 20 hours annually ISO multi-company drills (half-day) 8 per year ISO Company 20 hours/month ISO Driver Operator Drills (half-day) 4 per year ISO Officer Training 12 hours/year Inspector, Investigator, Peace Officer

    5. OTHER REQUIREments Hazardous materials (TCFP requires 10 TTFD does 16) Confined space/high angle 16 hours per year

    6. TRAINING FIELD ISO Multi-company drills TCFP Continuing Education classes Pumper and hose testing Hazardous materials training High angle and confined space Driving course Physical Assessment course

    9. OTHER TRAINING SOURCES DHS (Department of Health Services) classes - Anniston, AL National Fire Academy Texas A & M College Station GDEM (Governors Department of Emergency Management) Specialized classes (Arson Investigators, Radiological, Railcar Emergencies, Bombs)

    10. PHYSICAL FITNESS NFPA 1500 and others recommend TTFD requires one hour per day Written in Standard Operating Procedures Workout facilities at each station (Assistance to Firefighters grant) Medical examination annually Physical assessment annually Combat Challenge Team

    11. INJURIES AND DEATHS 100,000 Firefighter injuries annually 100 Firefighter deaths annually 50% - Heart Attacks 25% - Driving to or from fire Inability to perform basic fundamentals under stress leads to accidents/deaths Examples: radio communications, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), hose stream application

    16. RECRUITMENT Whole new culture in fire service Proactive approach to recruiting Tougher requirements Competition with other cities

    17. TRAIN! TRAIN! TRAIN! MUST CONTINUALLY TRAIN Very skill-driven profession Diverse (Knots, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Jaws of Life) Rusty skills = poor performance LOSE SKILLS LOSE LIVES
