National Standard Instructors • National qualification • HCC - one of the first LAs to be accredited as an Instructor Training Provider (ITP) • Instructor training – 4 day course plus mentoring sessions • Over 40 active paid instructors plus volunteers • 5,000 children trained to Level 2 each year

  5. School Cycle Training Programme • Most courses combine Levels 1 and 2 • Run in Years 5 and 6 • 5 sessions • HCC facilitates courses • Herts Direct information including on-line booking of summer holiday courses

  6. Funding • There is no budget to provide cycle training free of charge • Schools / parents have paid for the service for many years (HCC does not charge for courses run by volunteers) • Since 2006 DfT has provided funding to encourage more Level 2 cycle training

  7. The Future • Cycle training is now a year round activity • Provided by a bank of nationally qualified instructors • Continue to innovate to provide an even better service to Hertfordshire

  8. Conclusion • Have the Scrutiny questions been answered? • The cycle training programme continues to develop in light of Bikeability • All cyclists’ training needs can be addressed • Staff whose activities impact on cycling have been Bikeability trained

Conclusion • HCC has been instrumental in the development of the National Standard training course for instructors which has been shared nationally • Stakeholders were involved in development of family training • Cycle training is linked into School Travel Plans and Safer Routes to School projects
