  1. BI Background Information p3 Animal Rights Movement & Animal Rights Activists The Animal Rights Movement is a term that refers to organized efforts opposing the use of animals for research, food, and clothing. People who defend animal rights, called animal rights activists, point out that animals feel pain and have reasoning ability. They say that animals deserve greater moral consideration than human beings generally give them.

  2. BI Some animal rights activists work to outlaw laboratory experiments on animals. Others teach that human beings do not need to eat animals for survival. Many activists protest the use of fur coats or leather products. They also oppose hunting and spectator sports in which animals may be treated inhumanely, such as bullfighting and dog racing. (From the 1998 World Book Encyclopedia)

  41. CP-lp20 Have an open discussion on the topic given below. These expressions may help your discussion: Try this discussion:

  42. Try this discussion: CP-lp20 Student A: Student B: Yes, we can. Curiosity shapes people so much. It’s what makes them who they are. It’s what makes them unique. What subjects and topics interest you? Where will your interests lead you in life? That’s so important to students in their college work. I’m afraid I don’t agree. Curiosity is only a part of the picture. The big difference in students has to do with study habits. Does a student work hard, or not? Believe me, those differences can be huge. Like night or day. Actually, I think you’re both right. You’re just pointing out different aspects of a person’s character. Both are very important. Why choose one over the other? That’s true. Neither is completely right or wrong. A person’s curiosity says so much. So does his or her capacity for work. You can tell a lot about someone through either aspect. Student C: Student D:

  43. RW list Reading & Writing Text A I Like Animals Text A Exercises Grammar Review Practical Writing Text B Horse Sense — Wilhelm von Osten Tries to Teach Horse to Count Text B Exercises Text C Endangered Animals(濒危动物)— Extinction(灭绝)Is Forever Comprehension of the Text Basic Reading Skills

  44. Starter1-1 Text A Starter Is there anyone who does NOT like animals? The answer is probably no. But people like animals for different reasons. Tell the class what is your favorite animal and why you like it. Now read the following passage and find out what reasons the writer gives for liking animals.

  45. CH Article1-2 Text A I Like Animals Laura A. Moretti 1 “Why do you suppose you like animals so much?” was the question put to me on ChristmasEve. I knew my family was expecting me to say something like, “I like animals because they’re clever and fun to play with.” 2 But instead I said, “I like animals because they’re honest.” N ?

  46. CH Article3-4 Text A 3 “About what?” one of my brothers asked — as if honesty were merely about telling the truth, and everyone knows animals can’t talk! His question was met with heartylaughter. 4 “I like animals because they don’t pretend to be someone they’re not,” I continued in my reply. “Animals don’t fake their feelings.” N ?

  47. CH Article5-6 Text A 5 We were sitting on sofas and arm-chairs after our dinner and present-opening. Coffee was being served, so I seized the opportunity. 6 “I like animals,” I added, “because they only take out of life what they need. They don’t abuse their environment, pollute their water and the air they breathe. They don’t build weapons of massdestruction and use them against others — particularly members of their own species. I like animals because they have no use for those things.” ?

  48. CH Article7-9 Text A 7“That’s because they don’t know any better,” my sister argued. “They don’t do those things because they don’t know how.” 8 “Lions don’t get together,” I countered her, “and decide how to exterminatezebras — their very source of food. I don’t think it’s because they don’t know how. I think it’s because it’s counterproductive.” 9 They laughed. N N ?

  49. CH Article10 Text A 10 “I also like animals,” I continued, “because they don’t dwell on things of the past, nor use them as excuses for behavior in the present. And they don’t plan to live some day in the future; they live today, this moment, fully, completely, and purely. I like animals because they live their lives with so much more freedom than humans live theirs.” ?

  50. CH Article11-13 Text A 11 “That’s because they don’t think,” one of my cousins offered. 12 “Is that the difference?” I wondered. “You meant to say they don’t think the way we think.” 13 The room had become strangely quiet. I was amazed at how closely my family was listening. N ?
