  1. Welcome Team Captains! Pick up a purple folder from the stage and be seated.

  2. Captain Meeting 1: *What’s in my folder?*How can I fundraise?

  4. THANK YOU For all of your hard work. We know it’s sometimes not easy to motivate or organize your friends and we appreciate the time and effort you put into Relay.

  5. Since 2004, Relay for Life has raised: 2.5 Million Dollars And its making a difference

  6. What’s in a team captain folder? Where can I find electronic copies of these papers?

  8. Fundraising Sheets Due on or before March 13th

  9. DO write letters There is nothing like an old fashioned, hand-written letter. Write a letter to friends and family asking them for a donation.

  10. DO ask about matching gifts If your parents work for a large company such as Johnson and Johnson or Merck, they may be able to participate in a program where the company matches every dollar that you donate to Relay for Life. Ask your parents if their employer participates… it is a very easy way to double your team’s fundraising total.

  11. DO sell luminaria Last year there were over 4,000 luminaria around the track outside. Each bag represents a donation of $5. Please make sure you read the order form carefully so that you meet the deadlines for the slideshow.

  13. DO plan ahead Especially when organizing spring fundraisers. Chances are there are 20 other teams that want to do a car wash on the same weekend in the same spot that you do. Make arrangements many months in advice. Be friendly, be clear, and be thankful to any business or manager that is able to help you out.

  14. DO write thank you notes Pay Relay forward! If a business gets a nice thank you from your team this year, they are more likely to help out another team next year. We have plenty of Relay for Life thank you cards that you should use to thank people who helped you meet your fundraising goal.

  15. DO rehearse your “reason to Relay” The American Cancer Society already carries with it a good reputation, but donors also like to know what motivates you to participate in Relay. Practice a 30 second upbeat, to the point, and heartfelt reason that you are participating in Relay for Life this year.

  16. DO NOT talk to strangers Under no circumstances should you be going door to door talking to people that you don’t know.

  17. DO NOT be pushy. Do not be that person, or that team, that makes someone annoyed with Relay for Life. There are 2,000 kids in Doylestown raising money: not every single person is going to buy something from every team. If you ask someone to make a donation and they decline, your reply is always, “Thanks for your consideration! Have a great day!” Pay it forward: they may donate tomorrow.

  18. DO NOT stand in traffic to ask for donations. It is an offense that you can be arrested for.

  19. DO NOT go nuts… … buying one million of something thinking that it is really going to be a great fundraiser. If it works really well you can always order more, but you don’t want too much left over so that you end up with no profit. This especially goes for items that you sell on the day of the event (glow sticks, etc.)

  20. DO NOT leave your parents out of the loop with fundraisers … you are going to need help from them. Make sure that you talk to your parents, and other parents on your team, from the moment you get an idea about a fundraiser. They will have to supervise everything that you do and probably will have some good ideas for you.

  21. I’ve collected donations… Now what?

  22. Turn in money on Bank Days in the main office…

  23. YES you should have all of your money unfolded and organized in an envelope. YES your team name and your name should b on it.

  24. YES your parents should keep the cash that you raise and WRITE A CHECK for your to bring to school. All checks get made out to the American Cancer Society.

  25. CASH can be stolen or lost and then all your hard work is GONE.

  26. A CHECK can be replaced if it is lost or stolen so your hard work will still be fighting cancer.

  27. CHANGE will be discarded. I will not count your change.

  28. You can also use the ACS website to raise money for your team. Your team will be listed on the website one month after you register.

  29. YES you should always wait to hand your donations directly to an adult and not leave it on a teacher’s desk or somewhere else.

  30. I turned in my donations… Where does the money go?

  31. People giving money to an organization have a right to know where their money is headed and what it will be used for. Be able to explain a little bit about this to a potential donor.

  36. Camp Can Do Patient Camp is for youth ages 8 to 17 who have ever been diagnosed with cancer in the last 5 years may attend Camp Can Do. The cost is free.

  38. Road to RecoveryEvery day thousands of cancer patients need a ride to treatment, but some may not have a way to get there.The American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program provides transportation to and from treatment for people who have cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their cars so that patients can receive the life-saving treatments they need.

  40. Besides fundraising… What should I be doing as a captain?

  41. BE RESPONSIBLE.

  42. Meet all paperwork deadlines.

  43. Remember that by April 26thyour chaperone list needs to be turned in.

  44. Remember that by May 16th your team’s fundraising total needs to average AT LEAST $50 per person. (The average per-student donation in 2013 was $101)

  45. The bright yellow fundraising planning letter in your folder is due today.

  46. Make this Relay the best it can be!
