PPECB- INTRODUCTION • Since it’s inception in 1926, PPECB participated and assisted Exporters – to ensure that perishable products are handled, stored and transported at specified/optimum temperatures. • It is PPECB’s duty therefore to assist and create world-wide confidence in South African perishable products, through certification of good practices.

PPECB – COLD CHAIN ROLES • We must promote consistency and ensure that optimum procedures, handling and stowage techniques are applied in suitable transport equipment. • PPECB Services play a pivotal role, in order to ensure that all products are carried at optimum conditions. • Risk management, not only for exporters and producers, but also for Vessel’s crew, is part of our daily duties.

CHANGING PATTERNS IN OUR MARKETS • Containers vs. Conventional Reefers • Container exports are growing = 73% / 27% split • Dec 96% • Cit 60% • Move back to Reefer & Ambient trains • Specialized shipments = 16 Countries. (JAP/USA) • Lack of newly build conventional reefer vessels (14% scrapping ratio) • Bigger container vessels – specific requirements • Port development – in order to handle bigger volumes - • Maputo to become a special shipment shipping port • Regulated > deregulated environment > now • into a food safety era
