Success Criteria for Opinion Essay • single main point is made and a position on the topic is taken (main idea) in the opening paragraph • there are three supporting details that explain and prove your main point and are included in the introductory paragraph • each supporting detail is developed into a separate paragraph with obvious and concrete examples with explanation • ideas are logically organized in a way that makes sense (most important to least, or least important to most) • concluding paragraph summarizes my position and my supporting details / points • sentences flow from one to the next (transition words are used) • tone is appropriate for purpose and audience (adult interested in opinion) • sentences are complete and clear • punctuation helps the reader understand what you mean • spelling is accurate so the reader can understand what you have written • paragraphs are clearly indicated (indented, skipped lines)
