  2. SXR max. power @ 5 nm or 250 eV • No taper • 80 GW*80 fs • =6.5 mJ gex,y = 0.4 mm Ipk = 3.0 kA sg= 2.7 E = 8.5 GeV • 2% quadratic • taper • 160 GW*80 fs • =13 mJ!

  3. SXR max. power @ 2.5 nm or 500 eV • 1%linear taper gex,y = 0.4 mm Ipk = 3.0 kA sg= 2.7 E = 12 GeV • 170 GW*80 fs • =13 mJ!

  4. Controlling the FEL power for damage • Use laser heater (increase E-spread 10X, but this affects HXR line) • Using emittance spoiler (insert a foil in SXR branch line, increase Emittance 10X) • 15 GW*80 fs • =1.2 mJ SXR @ 5 nm or 250 eV gex,y = 5 mm Ipk = 3.0 kA sg= 2.7 E = 8.5 GeV

  5. 2 keV FEL barely saturates at higher electron energy Just reach saturation in 61 m magnetic length (78 m total length gex,y = 0.6 mm Ipk = 3.0 kA sg= 2.7 E = 12 GeV

  6. Optical Klystron (OK) ? • Phase shifters (small chicanes) are required to match FEL phase every undulator break for the variable-gap undulator • A few of these chicanes may operate as OKs (R56 ~ 2 mm) to take advantage of small E-spread and to speed up bunching 4 OKs gex,y = 2 mm Ipk = 3.0 kA sg= 2.7 E = 13.5 GeV A-line soft x-ray FEL (Y. Ding)
