Canto 1 • Highlight each vocabulary word in Canto 1. • You may be familiar with some of the words already. • As we read Canto 1 and we encounter these words, try to make inferences in order to guess at what the words might mean. • You may need to talk with a partner to determine the definitions, or use a dictionary.

  2. Locate 2 words in the introduction. The rest are in lines 5, 50, 66, 78, 85, 91, 109, 110, 124

  3. Juxtaposition-Lined up near each other • Incontinence-No control • Arduous-Difficult to climb • Avarice-Desire • Shade-Ghost • Tremulous-Nervous • Sage-Wise person • Suffers-Allows • Lamentation-Regret • Bemoans-Grief • Peter’s Gate-Pearly gates outside heaven

  4. Note The Bible describes a human lifespan as being “threescore and ten years,” or seventy years. Dante would have considered man’s lifespan to be seventy years; thus, “midway on our life’s journey” would make Dante thirty-five, locating the events in the year 1300.
